Quick question to OP or anyone who knows a lot about iron banner. I've never taken part in an iron banner before but how long does it take to rank up a level? Is it a long process? I play a couple of hours a day after work.

i usually do 2 characters to 5, one during the week and sunday monday you can rank up really quick since every day closer to tuesday you get alot more REP! if you buy the tempered buff
-
Got to rank 2 in one day so it doesn't feel to long
-
It takes too long don't do it. Just give up. Anyone in a similar situation should just accept the overwhelming difficulty of ranking up in IB and give up also.
-
You'll be fine I got three char to lvl 4 and 5 last time. Just wear shader, class item, use buff, and have do the nightfall and it will help w all your crucible bounties you have as well
-
Depends. There's a reddit post doing all the math, and he/she figured out that it would take ~8 hours to complete it on Monday if you have all three Iron Banner items(Shader, Emblem, Class Item.) and use the commendation thingy(gosh, I can't remember what it's called.) And that's only because that boon gets more potent as the week progresses.

It is a grind. Just saying. Last time it took me 4 days of full grind to hit rank 5. Ofc with rage breaks and shit to do in between. The later in the week, the higher the buff gets so you will get more rep for wins. You have to win to get rep

While it seems everyone has covered most of the answer, I'd like to pitch in with the math just so you get the general idea what you'll be facing. A regular IB match win gives you 50 XP. If you loose you get an Iron Medallion that is worth 40XP next time you win. You can only have 5 of those max at any time. Each level requires 2500XP (except for Level 1, you need only 1250XP) which brings the total required XP to 11250XP. If you were to only play matches and not use any modifiers, it would take you roughly 225 direct wins. Bounties will net you 100XP which significantly cuts down the numbers of wins per day. with a max of 6 bounties you can secure 600XP per day which cuts the total requirement to 11250XP - 7*600XP = 7050XP, which translates to 141 matches without modifiers active. None of the bounties are tied to wins, and they are moderately easy to achieve over the course of a day (perhaps the hardest one being getting 10 kills without dying) Here come the modifiers. Lord Saladin will sell you three key items at different levels: emblem (level 2), shader (level 3 and 5, if I remember correctly) and special item (level 4 hunter's cloak, warlock's bond and titan's cape). Every one of those items gives you 10% increase/boost in rep gained from matches and from turning in bounties. They are stackable, meaning if you have all three, you get 30% extra per win. This brings your XP per match up to 65XP and 133XP per submitted bounty. On top of that, there's the IB buff. This one is tricky. It gives a different boost every day of the IB which increases during the week, and it only lasts for 12 hours. I believe it starts at something around 10-15% extra XP for the first day, and it grows significantly over the course of the week. And is also stackable with the rest of the modifiers and the bounties. I remember by Sunday every win nets me about 166 XP with all modifiers on. So what does this all mean? I remember seeing somewhere (reddit was it?) that once you account for everything, including all modifiers, turning all bounties, win/loss ratios, it would take you roughly 150 matches to get to level 5. In layman terms: If you start one character from IB level 0 on Tuesday, you may be able to get to level 4 by Sunday playing 2-4hrs solid, but you have to get the modifiers active as they become available to you (buy the shader, emblem, etc.) and turning in bounties. If you go into the IB with a pre-built character that has all modifiers already, you can in theory get to level 5 much earlier, perhaps Satuday. In an extreme case I have gone from level 0 on Saturday night and get to level 5 Monday night. I did it once in the past and it was a grind but nonetheless is possible.

Great post. Just wanted to stress two things for the new guy. 1. Get the tempered buff. I occasionally forget it and hate myself when I do. Don't forget the buff. You waste rep and time going back to the tower. 2. You already don't have enough glimmer. Buying the emblem, shader, class item, 2 weapons and two armor pieces costs way, way more than the glimmer cap. If you're playing now before IB start, hit the exclusion zone. Otherwise, you'll be taking breaks to farm glimmer.
-
You can also save glimmer mats
-
It's probably to late to save glimmer mats for the OP, but yeah, I do that also.
-
Yeah I'm saving them so I can buy gear after how releases
-
Wow thank you dude. Very in depth and very helpful answer:)
-
Very well said
-
Got to rank 5 by Friday, not to hard but I did all the bounties and had the emblem, shader, and mark on.
-
If you play everyday for 2 hours you'll be rank 5 by Saturday/Sunday easy. Just buy the buffs and make sure you have glimmer. Do the nightfall before you start. (Not sure if that reflects, one of these guys will probably scream at me though if it doesn't so stand by on that one). But make sure to farm some glimmer because everything is expensive.

1-3 is super easy. With multiplers 4-5 aren't too bad. Depends when you play
-
It will be slower for you because you don't have the boosts. Focus on getting the shader, emblem and class item. FARM GLIMMER tonight, you're going to need it. Either shader / emblem works, so don't worry about getting the best one. These are all reusable. You will need to buy the Tempered buff. This adds to reputation and ramps up quickly as the week progresses. So you will do much better later than earlier. Plus as you buy gear, it will be even easier to rank up. Have fun!
-
Work your multipliers. spend a mote on the tempered from Saladin before playing each day, buy and equip IB shader, emblem, and class item. I can't confirm yet but have heard the nightfall boost helps as well.
-
Nightfall boost doesn't apply to iron banner
-
Really depends on which days you play and how much Reddit has a really good reforge guide with all of the buff xp for each day on a chart
-
Edited by markl0104: 4/27/2015 8:14:52 PMNightfall buff does not boost Iron Banner rep. Only the Tempered buff and the emblem + shader + class item works to boost IB rep.
-
Cool. I know it's nothing like crucible but I tend to max agility and recovery or max armour instead?
-
All these count in IB. So what works for you.
-
Edited by DarthAWM: 4/27/2015 7:39:35 PMMechanics are exactly crucible, use what works for you.
-
Ok. Thanks for the advice dude :)
