If there was a system of say it'd have to go like this
Exotics for exotics
Legendary for legendary
Rare for rare
And so on.
Along with having to be the same tier in gun, it would need to be same class gun.
Exotic hand cannon for Exotic hand cannon
Exotic scout rifle for exotic scout rifle
Legendary shotgun for legendary shotgun
Legendary sniper for legendary sniper
And you get the point.
I think this would work in not having somebody with an abundant amount of supplies just giving me them away to other people

I don't think it'd need to be the same class. I think same tier is enough.

I would agree that under these circumstances the game would be able to sustain trading

No, how often would this happen? "Oh hey, I have no Gjallarhorns but ten truths!" "Oh, look! I have no truths but ten Gjallarhorns!" "Wow, I love this strict system!" I'm just complaining now instead of everyone complaining later.
