Maybe when you make a character RNG selects which items you can get and which you can't. You could get Gally drops but not Thunderlord so you need to find someone with Thunderlord and you trade. That might work with Rares and Legandaries also. Might not be a foolproof plan but it could work. Or just trade with fireteam members that were present when you got the drop.
