It's a little extra work (you might even already do it), but before you begin raiding for the day, just launch it then go to orbit to see where you are.

But it doesn't show you where you are in the raid from orbit does it? I know which raid I'm doing (I'm not THAT old :-) ) I mean for example that last week I had 2 characters with the Atheon Checkpoint and 1 with Templar. I'd only joined at that point for each character, but when I was joining a raid group later on I selected the character with the Templar checkpoint to join a group doing Atheon by accident, so I lost the Templar checkpoint. I know that it's possible to go into the raid from whichever checkpoint you hold to find out, then go back out and join the fireteam with a different character if necessary, but that seems exhaustive given how easily they could put something in that tells you where u are (esp when the loading times are sometimes abysmal)
