What Are The Rules of PvP Melee? Please Explain!

I am still trying to understand one thing about the Crucible; hand-to-hand combat. This may be my biggest frustration. I can live with snipers, shotgun sliders, and grenade spam. But this is a source of endless frustration. For example: I am running my Striker Titan. I blindside another Striker Titan, hit him with a normal melee attack. He takes about 3/4 of his health in damage. He turns and hits me with an uncharged melee attack; which kills me in one punch. WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED? I have my Titan on a maximum armor build. It's regular Crucible; level advantages are disabled. So what the hell? How does this work? It's not only Titans that kill me. I can punch a Hunter, who turns and knifes me to death; or a Warlock, who proceeds to fatally bitch-slap me. In one blow. Does the counterpunch have the advantage over the initial attack? Because it seems that way to me. And yet, I can't count how many times I have myself been killed in a single punch. Also, how do I overload my storm grip? What exactly IS a "Storm Grip Overload"? Because "Storm Fist" is the only attack I am familiar with, yet I keep getting killed by a "Storm Grip Overload". I want to do that. Who can help me with insight into these problems? Who can help me beat people to death (or knife, or slap, depending on what class I'm playing) more effectively? Thanks for reading.

  • Melee is a 2 hit kill. Chances are there there was something that happened between your melee and his melee, either a shotgun blast that clipped you, or a high impact primary. Stormfist overload is the first titan's melee buff, it has a chance to recharge the heavy melee upon melee hits. Pretty much giving you another heavy melee. It could also be that your shield was not fully charged. A common tactics is shotgun melee. Which is you fire your shotgun and throw a melee right after. Sometimes they are so quick that it seems like you were 1 shot by a melee.

  • The rule is that your melee never one hit kills and everyone else's does. This is why I stay out of melee range.

  • Well its rare but I have been killed dozens of times with one melee hit. The melee was everytime this strange storm grip overload. If I had ps4 or Xone Id make a montage out of these instakills. It might be lag or just bugged shoulder charge or something. Still a retarded thing to happen.

      • I'm in the same boat as you, thoroughly mystified by the melee math. What I (think I) know is: You generally should not die from an ability melee when you're at full health. The only time this can happen is if you're hit from behind by a hunter running Backstab. Due to lag in PvP, it might not be apparent that you've been hit from behind even though the game registers it as such. An ability melee deals significant damage though, so even if you've lost a little health by taking one or two bullet hits, an ability melee might be enough to kill you. You should generally not try to melee a full health opponent. Loosen him up with a few bullets and then go in for the melee. That's why the shotgun-melee combo is so popular. It's almost a guaranteed kill even if the shotgun misses most of its target. Overload is the Titan ability to immediately reset the cooldown of Storm Fist. Some gear allow you to land melee hits very rapidly. It's possible that you take 2 hits without noticing, or possibly the lag makes it seem less apparent. There are rumors of critical melee hits in PvP, but I haven't seen any definitive confirmation on this. Another rumor is your momentum affects the melee damage, so if you run towards someone and then melee, you deal more damage. Again, no confirmation on this. That's about all the info I have. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can add to this or correct what I've posted.

          • Ive wondered the same thing. Friends who pvp more than me just put it down to lag. The other person probably shotgunslapped you but you only see the melee.

          • It mystifies me too. As a Warlock wearing Claws I can scorch more or less anyone EXCEPT Titans in shoulder charge and Hunters when they are flitting about like deadly fairies.

          • Either lag or he managed to land a crit on you. Melee attacks can crit, it's just very difficult as melee aim assist is really high and normally drags your aim centre-mass. Storm grip overload is simply Storm Grip with the "Chance to deal area damage" perk active. Doesn't deal bonus damage or anything and is essentially useless in pvp, but Storm Grip is so terrible that it doesn't matter which perk you choose anyway.

          • Generally speaking in regards to Titan melees... PvE: Punch the absolute shit out of everything. PvP: Avoid fistfights at all costs. Don't ask we why, but the Titan melee is absolute garbage in PvP (not talking about Shoulder Charge here).
