The Hunter and the Wolf [Destiny Story]

Hello everyone! I wrote this a number of weeks ago but have only finally decided to actually post it here. I took some liberties with the timeline of Destiny (plus some other elements probably) and also wrote this for a general audience, so I'm sorry if I explain anything that seems obvious/simple or out of place. I also apologize for any formatting errors as this was copied from a Word document on my computer. For those of you that take the time to read this, I hope you like it! (Great wall inbound) I do not own or am affiliated with the game Destiny, the companies Bungie and/or Activison. This is a work of fiction done as a writing exercise for recreational purposes only. “Run the coordinates by me again.” “Of course, grid number 57-” The pilot stopped his small, floating, puzzle box-like robotic advisor with the gesture of his hand. This ghost, created by the Traveler to aid guardians imbued with the power of the Light in their war against the Darkness, had forgotten that his guardian was not one for technical talk. “I’m not a Warlock. I don’t need numbers. I need places.” the hunter, clad in a cloak and slim survivalist armor, said in a slightly annoyed tone. “The Reef, Asteroid Chi. 5.67 kilometers north and 2.38 kilometers west of safe landing zone.” “Chi? X marks the spot, eh?” he smirked. “I do not understand.” responded he ghost, rotating its front half like a dog tilting its head. “You never get my jokes.” “I don’t understand how that was fun-” “Are we sure it’s there?” “Yes. There’s one discrepancy with the coordinates, however. The relic is-” The ghost was once again cut off, now by a radio transmission from a pair of unknown ships. “Intruder bearing 7-3-9, you have crossed into the realm of the Awoken. State your business, or be fired upon by the order of the queen.” “Fill me in when we get there. Time to see if the Vanguard’s new tech is really as good as they keep claiming.” With that the hunter’s sleek, jet-like ship sped up and rounded some debris, slipping out of view of the Awoken interceptors then rocketing upwards. The interceptors gave chase and the radio channels boomed. “HALT. BY ORDER OF THE QUEEN YOU ARE TRESPASSING.” The hunter’s ship kept speeding, pointed towards the heart of the queen’s domain. The interceptors fired and the ship swayed though space, snapping around debris and weaving through small asteroids with evasive maneuvers, but it was for naught. The interceptors’ weaponry easily melted the space craft’s exterior armor, piercing the hull and wreaking havoc on the engines, rendering the ship useless. The guard ships fired a final salvo and as quickly as it began, the engagement was over. The ship was immobile and the interceptors moved in to extract whatever remained of the ship’s crew. “Damn, what a shame. I guess Halliday isn’t as good as the Vanguard thought, huh?” he muttered, “Oh well, looks like it’s time to go…” The ship then re-emerged from the shadows of the debris, hidden by dust and silenced by a dead engine. “Stupid holograms don’t fly fast enough. Let’s just get to Chi so we don’t have to deal with the Awoken anymore, I’m missing the Fallen a bit anyway. Never thought I’d prefer weird spider people over purple humans…” The Hunter’s ship pushed forward uninterrupted by the forces of the Awoken Queen and shortly arrived at the Asteroid Chi. The hunter, Kennedy, materialized on the surface of the asteroid, accompanied by his ghost, Jenkins. “Armaments, Kennedy?” "My standard Vanguard rifles please… With the usual gifts from the factions on back up.” “Badger CCL and Ice Breaker coming up, Red Hand IX and Hide and Seek-42 on standby.” The weapons appeared in the hands of the Hunter, he slung the prototype sniper over his back, then reached down with his left hand for his thigh, grasping emptiness. “Umm, Jenkins, we can’t really do this without some ammo.” he said holding his hand open at his waist. “Oh, my apologies!” The ghost materialized a magazine in the hunter’s hand, then two more each appeared attached to the outsides of his thighs. The hunter loaded his rifle. “Sights set to three hundred fifty meters, chamber clear… Shots loaded and safety’s off. Let’s move.” The ghost then summoned the hunter’s sparrow hover bike out of nothingness, and they took off towards the coordinates, knowing they had a daunting task ahead of them. But the prize would be worth it. “What were you saying before about a discrepancy, Jenkins? “Ah yes, there’s a third set of coordinates.” “What? Besides longitude and latitude?” the hunter said a bit confused. “Elevation.” the ghost replied. “Ah, it’s on top of an icy mountain, in a sunny valley? A pristine hill perfect for picnics with a ghost-ette? “Try lower.” the ghost said with a bit of aloofness in his robotic voice. “No hill or mountain?” “No.” “Sunny valley it is… This should be a piece of cake.” he smiled to himself under his helmet. “No Kennedy, lower.” the ghost said in a pressed tone. “Pit?” “Close, try catacombs. Looks like it’s near the core of the asteroid.” “Nice and dark?” “Of course.” “My light should be weakened… Sounds like a challenge for once.” “Please be careful, sir.” “Aren’t I always?” the hunter quipped. “No. I revived you three times just last week.” "Yeah but that was running the Sepkis simulation with plenty of light, I didn’t actually bite it. Remember the strike in New Beijing?” “I remember you nearly losing your leg to your own trip mine.” “You’re not a real Hunter unless you set off your own trip mine at least once, Jenkins. I’m talking about why we’re here, when that Titan-” “We’re here.” The ghost cut off the hunter for once as they arrived at a large cave. The Hunter dismounted his sparrow, which dematerialized shortly after, and bellowed into the cave. “ECHO!” “ECHO! Echo! Echo. Echo…” the cave responded. “Deep. Really deep.” “Are you still sure about this?” the ghost muttered lowly with uncertainty. “I’ve never been more sure, Jenkins. Shine a light please?” the ghost illuminated the black in front of them like a flashlight. “Only one way to go now… Into the wolves’ den.” the hunter said as he set foot in the cave with his ghost in tow, painting the nearer walls of the cave with luminosity. They walked for a few minutes, using topographical scans of the few parts of the cave that lie near the surface to guide them. “How much further, Jenkins?” “The scans stop riiight… Here.” The ghost said as they came to various tunnels leading downwards. “Alright, which is the right one?” “I couldn’t tell you, we’re already a few meter down and the scans were already a bit sketchy up to this point. We’re on our own in the search for the relic now.” the ghost explained while the hunter peered over the caves for a few moments. “This one.” he piped up with a great sense of confidence in his voice as he stepped towards an opening on the left that was over three meters high and about two across. “How can you tell?” the ghost pardoned. “For starters, those caves are too small to fit larger Fallen, that one in the center and the one over on the right are just too huge and obvious. We know the House of Wolves don’t station Servitors this far out from the queen’s palace so they don’t need to fit through this thinner entrance… Plus there’s some runes etched behind this rock here.” The hunter explained, pointing to some etchings in the stone wall just above a medium sized rock close to the ground and next to the outside of the cavern entrance. “Ah, very well then.” the ghost said complacently as he followed the hunter downwards. As they descended the cackling and garbled talking of Fallen guardsmen and some footsteps could be heard resonating through the catacombs, getting louder with each step the pair took until they spotted some figures clad in a dark blue armor. “Hold up.” the hunter said rapidly taking a knee, “You know what to do…” The ghost responded to the command by dematerializing the rifle in the hunter’s hand and replacing it with a smaller, red hand cannon which resembled a revolver. The four magazines of ammunition on the Hunter’s thighs were replaced with cylindrical cartridges that each looked like a revolver’s chamber, which all adhered to his left thigh while he holstered his weapon on his right and unsheathed the knife from under his arm. The ghost’s light went out as he disappeared from view, dissipating, and then with a small crack of lightning the hunter also disappeared, invisible in a cloak of refracted light, and his vision became tinted green as his survivalist gear detected the absence of light. 3/3 The other two Captains began firing clusters of red-hot shrapnel at the swift hunter, who was merely a blur. The hunter looked at the Captain to his right and sprinted at him for a few steps, extended his left arm with an open hand, and then pulled it back to his chest in a fist. He blinked, and teleported to close the gap between himself and the Captain. The hunter swung the arc blade in his right hand, he hit the Captain’s left arm. He slashed backhandedly, he drug lightning across the Captain’s stomach and shattered his shielding. He attacked with his blade once more, going to slash at the captain’s head but the arc light dissipated. The hunter’s knife merely glanced the captain’s helm, he passed the knife to his left hand as he completed the slashing motion and reached for his hand cannon with his other as the Captain staggered. The hunter managed to fire three shots point blank at the Captain’s chest as he regained his stance. He fell with a fleeting whimper. The hunter was now aware of the gun fire from the third Captain as his own shields flickered. He dove forward, jumping over the dead Captain before him, and rolled to spring back up while facing the Captain. He blinked at him, not close enough. The hunter fired off three more rounds at the Captain as he now charged at the hulking alien, two connected, breaking the Captain’s shields. The Captain stammered from the hits. The hunter pulled the fist that still held a knife to his chest, the tip pointing at the Captain. He jumped. He closed the gap with a fluid blink strike and struck the Captain’s chest, bouncing off the alien’s armor. The Captain swung his set of lower arms upwards and knocked both the blade and gun from the hunter’s hands. He reached over his shoulder and, with the magnetic hold releasing, drew his shotgun. The hunter dropped on his back and fired four consecutive shots at the Captain, hitting his leg, chest, and glancing his shoulder as the weapon kicked upwards. “Thank God for Dead Orbit modifiers…” the hunter thought. The Captain fell forward, the barrel of his gun glancing outwards off the rocky interior of the asteroid as it hit the ground, and his weapon pointed away from the hunter. The Captain punched the hunter’s helmet with one of his upper arms, and the hunter’s shield broke with a loud pop. “Not like this...” he thought, briefly stunned from the blow. The hunter used a striking kick upwards with his left leg, making the Captain wince as he then tried to push the alien off of him with his foot. He pulled his right knee up to his chest, reached for his boot, and drew his left arm across his face to guard himself in a fetal position. The alien merely bounced slightly from the hunter’s attempt to free himself from underneath the alien. The alien fell closer on top of the hunter, and yelled at his face as the ghost watched from the far side of the chamber, the smaller guardian eclipsed by the spider-like humanoid. Suddenly the alien collapsed. His body rolled off of the hunter, and the hunter stood. His boot sheath empty and a handle protruding from the alien’s neck. The ghost merely revealed himself and blinked. “Now,” the hunter sighed, “about that relic…” He said, turning his attention to the cache of weaponry and spoils. The hunter walked forward, looking down at a pile of scavenged metals and various alien armors when he picked up something sized for a human. “Ah, here it is. Jenkins, do you know why this relic is so valuable?” the hunter asked inquisitively. “Please, sir. Enlighten me.” the ghost replied, curious. “This armor absorbs and stores the light of a distant star, you could say it’s hungry like the wolf. Heh… Anyway, it then allow its wearer to channel the light to help out your pack if you know what I’m saying.” “Why all the wolf puns, Kennedy?” the tired ghost asked. “This is the Crest of Alpha Lupi,” the hunter said, turning to show the armored vest to his ghost. The armor was made of a silver metal, embroidered with various branches and vines, and featured a large, golden wolf’s head in the center of the chest. “And with it, we’ll never have a situation like Hank’s again… He thought he could take on a Baron if I showed up later to help him out, like a surprise attack. He was right but I was late, so the baron killed him. If I could’ve channeled the light he needed fast enough into his ghost, I could’ve resuscitated him before-” “DON’T. SAY IT.” the ghost said angrily, flying close to the hunter’s face. “…before the baron crushed his ghost.” the hunter said grimly, staring into the eye of his ghost. “I lost a battle brother, but you lost a real brother, Jenkins. I told you not to forget why we came here.” “I didn’t forget, I just didn’t want to remember…” the ghost sulked and floated backwards, away from the hunter. The hunter and the ghost stayed where they were for a few moments, remembering those they had lost, thinking of those they could’ve saved, swearing it wouldn’t happen again. “…Ready to go home, Jenkins?” The hunter looked up from the armor he held in his hands to his ghost, “I think the Fallen have caught on to our scheme.” he said, hearing movement and alien grunts. Absolutely, Kennedy.” the ghost said as he briefly channeled light into himself and the hunter, causing them to glow a bright white before they dematerialized from the inner asteroid and were suddenly aboard the jet like ship. “Thank the Traveler for this light-link technology… Now let’s get this ship back to the Tower Hangar before the Vanguard notices.” the hunter said as he sat down, then piloted his craft silently out the back of the Reef and charted a course for the Tower.
