1. Create a PSN account and link that to you B.net account (I know, for a non-PSN owner, that feels gross).
2. Sign in with your PSN account, and unlink the current XBL account.
3. Link your currently used XBL account.
4. Sign out and sign in with your newly linked XBL account
5. Unlink your PSN account (or leave it linked as a backup).
Note, if you get any warnings about not having a gamertag at step 3, try again later. In fact, try next week because known issues around this step should be resolved by then.

i created a PSN account but whenever i try to link it to bungie.net, it keeps saying 'external authentication error'. how can i fix this?

Go back to the Sony site and check that you have created an "Online ID" agreed to terms of service, verified your email, etc. Sony won't let you use account anywhere else until you have done that.
