Should i buy Red Death or..?

Upgrade it

145

Buy it

342

I got an old Red Death from the VoG chest. As a matter a fact it was my first exotic drop, so i kinda have some nostalgic feelings here. Now Xûr sells both the weapon and the upgrade. I have over 100 coins but i am wondering if i should buy the upgrade or the weapon. I am leaning to buying the weapon, but i would like some opinions. Edit: Thanks for the feedback guys, i will buy myself a 331 Red Death and keep the old 300 one. I have used the 300 one in crucible and it was pretty solid. And when House of Wolves hits i will upgrade the 300 one if the upgrade is available before the weapon itself. Now if i know my history with Xûr a bit, i will most likely get another Red Death from a nightfall or something else -_- Edit 2: Take into consideration the fact that i have 20 exotic shards, 100+ coins, 20k glimmer and almost 800 heavy ammo synths ( i spend a little too much after the 6 week drought).

  • I would keep the original red death at 300 just for the sentimentality.

    • If it were 13 or 17 I'd say buy. 23 is getting steep.

      • Well, there were some posts a while back doing the math on upgrade vs buy new. And generally speaking it's more cost effective to upgrade the old Primary, but that assumes you are okay with only one. I myself figure on, like you said, buy a new one if possible and then upgrade the old in a later DLC, sort of leapfrog them over time. On a side note for armor, the stats are definitely a factor, I've almost upgraded a helmet only to realize I was going to lose 30 Int. Totally not worth it, and if he'd had one for sale with better stats I likely would have bought new. (or in the case of less frequently sold stuff, like HoPF I bought the crappy one he sold hoping to upgrade it later, since upgrades are much more common than actual sales of some items. (this is why you can upgrade already upgraded gear, lets you roll to a better stat roll, on armor only) Sadly he hasn't had a decently better one.

        • Depends on if you wanna spend 7k glimmer or 17 strange coins.

            • I upgraded cause i want to save some coins, and it was my first exotic so I figured "why not". Buying is the better way to go though.

            • Buy it, you save the glimmer which can be used to upgrade, and instead of spending a shard to upgrade to 331 and another to finish it when leveled, you get a 331 weapon and a shard for you when you break down the 300

              • you always buy it, never upgrade it, when you upgrade it, you lose 2 exotic shards, one for the purchase, one for the final upgrade, when you use strange coins to purchase, you GAIN an exotic shard because you can now delete the old Red Death

If your old one is levelled up, buy instead of upgrade, the 300 is still relevant and you can use it on Crota until the other ones ready

                • Simple: are you currently leveling up (unlocking additionnal nodes on) more than one exotic weapon? If you are, it might take you a long time to unlock the Red Death perk on the freshly-reset gun (since you'll be receiving bounty xp for one exotic at a time) and you might be better off acquiring that new Red Death.
