Crota Kill Hard Mode Guide

After the frustration I had the past two weeks and after spending almost 20 hours trying to kill Crota on hard (and trust me as level 31 it's not easy to get people to help you or like you to join them). I started analyzing what we were doing wrong and I couldn’t find any! As everyone know his part and all are experienced and skilled players, but I found “in my humble opinion” the strategies we were using depends heavily on luck more than skills for example, a boomer gets you when you jump out the bubble or Crota stands faster than he should or he just sprint into the room after the sword, I’m sure everyone will have their own stories of that sort. Anyhow so I went searching for guides and wanted to see what other people do. I found this guide which I like to call, the "safe way" more that the official way of killing Crota. Its made be they people who competes on the first in the world of defeating Destiny events like Crota hard mode. Hope you enjoy the guides! The beauty is that we don’t have to follow exactly, but with our experience, we can mix and match and come up with what works best for our play style. The horseshoe (a.k.a. two-man) strategy is the method used on every clan HM Crota kill that I've taken part in. I think it reduces the most risk for the swordbearer compared to the center ledge strategy. You mentioned a few things that could go wrong using the horseshoe, but most of those things could also apply to the center ledge; boomers can't hit the DPS team and usually no bubble is needed, but Thralls can occasionally melee through the transparent wall on the center ledge, so that method isn't without its own inherent risks. I can't speak for the newer clan members, but every clanmate that I've played with has known their role in the fight very well. It always takes multiple attempts, but the mistakes that cause a wipe are typically isolated events and people rarely make the same mistake more than once or twice during the same raid. CE HM (especially the Crota kill) is only challenging in that it requires perfection from everyone at the same time, and the margin of error is close to 0. Personally, I'm not a fan of CE HM for this reason and usually only run it now to help out; I feel that VoG HM is also challenging, but it allows for some degree of flexibility, and for me, being able to improvise (and still succeed) when something goes wrong is much more satisfying than playing such a rigid raid like CE HM. Hopefully, the Light level increase that will accompany House of Wolves will make the CE HM raid fun for me again.

  • I think this reddit post sums up the pros and cons of the strategies. And why most of the older clan members prefer horseshoe "The ledge strategy decreases controllable player errors but increases uncontrollable game mechanics, ie swordbearer pathing around like an idiot, boomers aggroing swordbearer, etc. The horseshoe strategy (double bubble as we call it) increases more controllable player errors ie killing the swordbearer too early, blowing up inside a bubble, getting killed by not taking cover from ogres and decreases uncontrollable game mechanics."

You guys are making this way too hard. Ledge strategy with a bubble on Swordbearers side to distract boomers and a bubble going back into and out of tower (with blessings). This gives everyone a shield entering and exiting tower, where most people die. Also put a bubble on stairs back to tower after ogre room. You might say that is a lot of bubbles. It is, but if you generated enough orbs at the start it isn't an issue. Just don't be a scrub and kill a knight on accident. Occasionally someone will die somewhere along the way. It happens and is usually due to glitches. I have run this strategy many times and usually do it first run. No need to over complicate things. Also, dont shoot rockets at the swordbearer right when he comes out. That will push him far right or left. Just snipe until he moves closer, if he survives that long. For second and third swordbearer, shoot the glass without aiming to draw swordbearer to right below the ledge. Easy kill. Just make sure swordbearer, if hunter, uses super and goes invis when running from this far away. He won't have time to crouch and go invis and still have time for two downs. He jumps straight to crota. Also, swing , slam, slam, slam is the way to go. If you time it right get a fourth slam in but no need to be a hero.

    • Ive done the ledge strategy but could never get a kill with it since the swordbearer would hide and the team was unable to drop him in time. People would also get killed running inside to the crystal room. My first crota hm kill was with the double bubble strategy (extras) and that took six hours to get down. Both titans were wearing helm of st 14. The second time we tried it only one titan had the helm so the boomer would end up moving around and was able to shoot through the open areas killing the swordbearer. With the horsehoe strategy, its riskier to be on the side closest to boomers. Maybe lvl 31s should take the crouching position closest to the door? Another thing is if you're too close to the back wall when you jump, boomers splash damage can take you out. I dont mind going with other strategies but i like to do whatever strategy the swordbearer is comfortable with.

    • A variation on horseshoe strat we ran once that worked pretty well: If you have two titans pop two bubbles each sword, one in the front of the boomer tower (preferably saint 14) and one in the normal position. Tower bubble blocks boomer shots, stairs bubble blocks crota magic. Another potential variation: When sword goes down pop two bubbles, one on crota platform in middle to protect swordbearer from boomers, one on stairs in Normal position to protect rockets. There's a 15 second timer to pick up the sword, and once you pick it up you have 30 seconds to use it. This is important. Once rocketeers are in positon, have swordbearer pick up sword and jump up on right side rock accompanied by titan (who pops bubble as sword goes in for first down to protect from boomers) This way you should be able to down swordbearer asap and get 3 downs per sword while still using the horseshoe strat and rotating between ogre spawn towers. Obv. In this case you'd chill in right tower for first two swords then rotate for ogres and third sword if necessary.

    • I'd be ok trying these strategies. I honestly believe that any strategy that minimizes the opportunity for death is the best one. I was talking with Loka and Wolfwood about this the other night and I wonder if away to improve our horseshoe strategy (which I agree is much easier for the swordbearer) would be: 1. Send 3 players down under the boomer tower to take out the swordbearer. 2. Leave 2 or 3 in the right top room to take out the boomers and wizard (leave your titan here so he has least distance to travel to put up his bubble). 3. Wait till Crota rotates right (drop wizard, drop swordbearer), then meet at the top of the stairs to take down Crota. Now, the only thing shooting at the DPS team is Crota, and he's pretty easy to handle from that perspective. 4. Rotate to left, 3-4 go down to deal with Ogres, 2-3 stay up to deal with Boomers/Wizard/swordbearer, rinse repeat. I don't know if it'll work or not but I see these advantages. 1. less thing shooting at you. 2. less gaurdians being put in harms way to die or get in the way of another guardian shooting rockets. (the players staying in the top rooms should pretty much always be safe). 3. the timing of the titan being first up the stairs is gone and the team is never exposed to crota without bubble. Also, if this works and we adopt it as a clan, I want the strategy to be called "Horseshoe Magic!!" :)

        • The example problems you listed all actually have specific causes usually and it is possible to trouble shoot them with a good enough group with minimal changes to the strat. 1. Boomer gets you as you leave the bubble: Causes: early aggro, may be due to killing a thrall on the way to the bubble, or popping a super in the tower between swords (mainly nova bomb or other "loud" supers), or shooting too close to the ceiling / back of the ogre room right before leaving to go to the bubble. Also may be improper positioning or exit of the bubble or accidental use of weapons/armor instead of blessing. Solutions: don't kill any thralls on the way to the bubble. Just don't do it. If you have problems with them entering the bubble get a saint 14 titan. Be careful on your way down, no slides, no jumping, don't aggro by shooting the ceiling unless they aggro a straggler and you have to in order to avoid oversoul. Make sure the bubble is positioned out from the wall and not too close to the doorway or someone will get splash damaged. Make sure nobody walks out the front of the bubble it's a bad idea. And finally be sure to call rockets once crota is definitely done shooting at you, and make sure everyone fires at the same time. If you go early left side rockets get hit by the last few wizard balls and if people can't fire in unison left side gets nailed with wizard balls while they fire their second rocket. 2. Crota stands up too fast. Causes: swordbearer runs in too soon, lag. Solutions: if you're swordbearer, be careful, crota spends a few frames of animation preparing/thinking about attacking you before he officially enters attack mode. If he goes down in these frames and not before them, he will jump directly into attack mode as his shields go back up. I use shadow jack so I can run in and prevent that entirely. Also have your team fire for a third down ASAP (but don't go for more slams, the sword will disappear). Also, before attempting the kill send your swordbearer to start their own instance then join them, to minimize lag. You need your swordbearer to know when exactly crota is getting up

          • Also be sure all your rockets exit immediately after firing their last rockets, crota will aggro to them if they're still there as he gets up for the last time, as he rotates mid his aggro range includes the bubble area
