Need Scout Rifle Tips

Ok so in the crucible I can do well with hand cannons, pulse rifles, and auto rifles, the moment I try and use a scout rifle though, I lose my mojo. I LOVE semi automatics in any fps, but to me the scout rifles of Destiny feel very clunky. Most semi automatics in games either are low fire rate/high damage or high fire rate/medium damage. Destiny's scout rifles are all around just "meh" feeling to me. They aren't quite compact sniper rifles but they're also not quite BF4's QBU-88 or MK11. I know to stay at longer ranges with them but they still feel bland and not as effective as they should be. Any tips or feedback is appreciated.

  • You should try MIDA if you. Seems to have a big-time aim assist. You land criticals even though you're not trying. And the built-in High caliber rounds makes your target highly likely unable to land hits on you in long range. Badger CCL and Ghaleon's Demise is very supperior on longer range with among highest Impact ingame as far as i know. A bit too slow for being effective close range. Crypt Dweller and Crusader are balanced lightweight scout rifles with rapid fire rate. Havent used The Calling/Another NITC/Crucible vendor scout rifles so i cant give any detailed info. But you should really aim for MIDA, best all-around scout in the game for PvP

    • Yea all I ever played was battlefield before destiny and scout rifles were my favorite....especially the schar. And still are my favorite in pve but just quite get the job done on pvp. I suck at crucible anyway which pisses me off cause I was really really good at battlefield. I guess it's the small maps and shields that mess me up IDK.

    • For crucible, you want either the badger ccl or the B-line trauma. Scout rifles as a whole are usually outclassed in PvP due to small maps. But in the large maps, they dominate. The scout rifles I mentioned previously (ghelion's demise would be better than a badger ccl, cause of re-roll ability) are two of the easiest to use in crucible, besides the MIDA multi-tool, which you don't have. The badger or demise does 73 damage per headshot, giving it that beauty of a 3 shot kill that you'll know from using hand cannons. Unfortunately, this class of scout rifle has less impact than the Word of Crota/Devil you Don't style of hand-cannon; and also a slower RoF. The few benefiting factors of using it are the 3 shot kill from virtually any range, the slightly larger mag capacity and reload speed, and clearer sights. The B-line trauma does approximately 43 damage per headshot, giving it a 5 shot kill, but the fire rate is quite close to the SUROS regime. This gives it a very fast TTK, at the cost of a very cramped finger. It is good for transitioning from pulse rifles or auto rifles, and is probably the best CQC scout rifle in the game (excluding MIDA). Overall, scout rifles aren't really great in the current crucible map-set, this is in part that the 2 large maps outside of DLC were removed from common playlists, and also that the smaller maps were added. They can be used quite effectively on maps with long lines of sight, such as shores of time or pantheon, but not as easily as other weapons. If you want to use scout rifles in destiny's current map-set for PvP, you will have to be dedicated, and accepting that your K/D might drop.

      • I have found that people like you seem to do well with weapons like the mida multi tool or badger ccl (i think) or any other faster rate of fire scout. I guess it's just enough like an auto rifle that they do well but hey who knows. The scout rifles also are the only weapons really used for long range as most of the other weapons work at close to mid range hence why I am recording the fast fire rate weapons as there as much riding on each shot.

        • When I first started playing I used hand canons constantly. After playing a lot of PvE I would wander into the crucible and do well with my hand canon (I was one of those poor souls who used the thorn before the buff). I switched to scout rifles in PvE now because I started to really like them but when I found myself back in the crucible I took out a hand canon and realized I was doing awful. The point I'm trying to make is that PvE is a great place to practice with your new weapon type; learning through experience on how to take out close targets or lead moving ones. Once you go into the crucible the only problem you'll have is dealing with the opponents skill and knowledge of the map, getting the kill won't be the hard part

With a scout you have to be at a long ranges and strafe A LOT. There will be many times you'll be fighting a sniper and you'll need to move around quite a bit. To be honest they can't really compete with most primaries in the game unless you're pretty far out. I basically use scout/shotgun combo when I run my scout rifle because I need the up close power too. It's not like suros where its effective at all ranges. You're going to want to always have a surprise advantage and a good place to shoot from. One good thing is scout rifles make better use of cover because they are semi automatic. You can pop in and out of cover much better than an AR user or a pulse rifle user because they have to expose themselves far longer to shoot than you do. I recommend the high impact 3 shot scouts. Crypt Dweller has the lowest TTK but I find that it's hard to hit every shot reliably. The three shot ones feel much better and are smoother at long ranges and to hip fire (which you will actually want to do sometimes) I use gheleon's demise even though my perks suck for the most part. I only use it on blind watch, skyshock, asylum, and shores of time though. Anywhere else you're going to feel out of place. Vision of confluence is a great one too, if you have it. I prefer firing it semi auto at long ranges but it's nice because full auto really helps up close. Just know the limitations of your scout. They aren't like pulse rifles where they're good almost anywhere. But if you use them just right it pays off. Gheleon's is Definitely my second favorite crucible primary. Praedyth's timepiece is my first. RIP timur's lash. It did not survive the nerf well ahah. Edit- use my scout on bastion and first light too!!

          • Tip: use them in PvE, that's what they're designed for. There's a video that some guy posted here that's full of scout rifle and sniper tips, but his "advice" boils down to "instantly acquire every enemy's head and lock onto it like your crosshair is glued there like I can, and then you'll find scout rifles easy!".

          • Shoot them in the head. Scout rifle will not outshoot any gun unless you use it outside of the range of your opponents gun. The reason they typically don't work that well in crucible is the maps max out at a medium range engagement for the most part. There's only a handful of maps where they would be worth using ahead of another weapon type. That's speaking generally of course. MIDA is really good though.
