why such a stupid number? 34? can't they just cap it at 50 or a normal number? Enough of this one level here and there.

Each DLC adds 2 levels and Comet: Plague of Darkness adds 10 character levels so by the end of all DLC the max level will be 50 ready to cross into Destiny 2

No this is my pure speculation, there was a leaked image confirming Comet will add 10 character levels but it's general consensus that each dlc will bring 2 light levels. All my thinking buddy I'm afraid, nothing confirmed so I may be totally wrong here!

Exactly nothing is confirmed. Remember what Destiny was going to be and what it turned into. This expansion could change and be pushed off to a later date. As far as we know they could keep raising the cap one or two levels at a time permanently for the life of destiny
