Depending on the game it is a measure of how well you perform even with objective scenarios and really does matter. That being said it really doesn't matter in Destiny because the PVP is absolute garbage compared to other titles that perform better. This especially applies to latency and weapon balance attributed to an overuse of statistics, poor weapon/map balance design amongst the litany of other bad design decisions.
