Explain the inconsistencies, my wife saw it originally as white/gold, then as blue/black in the same lighting, now it's white/gold again. Same thing happened with my brother, meanwhile I've seen it white/gold the entire time. If what you say is true wouldn't people see the same colours consistently?

  • The inconsistency comes from the process your brain goes through when processing what you see. The original photo that went viral, if you take it into to photoshop, is a light blue and a dark gold, however, due to the glare of the lighting in the top of the photo, depending on how bright your screen is, what angle you view the the photo, which part of the photo you focus on initially, and how focused your initial focusing is, you will think you see one color or the other. The reason behind this is when you look at the world, your eyes compensate for the white light you see, and contrast that white with other colors, called white compensation. Due to the fluorescent light in this picture, the camera that took it was not able to preform the same level of white compensation, so the florescent light basically flooded the photo. That is where the blue undertone comes from. The gold comes from the brightness at which the fluorescent light flooded the photo, and the surrounding things in the photo. Since both colors aren't extreme in any direction, the colors will seem to differ depending on how you perceive it. If you cropped out just the dress, you would see light blue and gold. It's like when you leave your flash on and it affects how the image is colored. But looking at a properly lit photo, it is easy to tell what color the dress is.
