Here's a quick version of a much larger post I plan on making.
The traveler was discovered on Mars
Humans went to get it
The golden age began
Mars was one of the first place colonized
Followed quickly by the moon and Venus
Both, before they could could be fully colonized, were met with resistance
Venus was building a city when they find the Vex
On the moon we meet crota
The Fallen came in and started bringing the fight directly to us
The Cabal came and brought the fight to mars
The darkness came and the traveler froze up
Rasputin stepped up
The traveler in its last effort created the ghosts
Say... 30 years pass? No more than a generation of people.
The ghosts revive us

Well put and much better then anything the game did to tell us the story.

But in game it says that the dark age lasted like a thousand years...

Where did it say that? Because it's entirely unrealistic

Well we at least know that people hadn't been on the moon for centuries.

Again, I'm just asking for where that was said. I'd like to be as accurate as possible

That is what ghost says when you first arrive on the moon in the cut scene before the first mission.
