Patrol/public events is the best part of this game. I'll stand by that statement.
The feeling you get from successfully finishing a tough public event with a bunch of randoms is the feeling, I think, that Destiny was trying to go for all along. It's distinct from raids, strikes, and the Crucible. It's you, out in the frontier, doing anything you can to win. And it's just random enough to feel "new" each time.
They should crank the Public Event mechanic up to -blam!-ing eleven.

Completely agree! Sometimes, a public event spawns and I'm alone. Suddenly two sparrows come barreling toward me at the speed of sound and I think, YES!! Guardians!! It's funny how the sky going dark still gets me hyped!

If Bungie could capture that feeling in other game modes, or more consistently - watch out.

:-) definitely! My favorite is the vex sacrifice one, with a group of randoms, just pure fun! When the hydra spawns, and it's a madhouse to down him, a little sigh of relief when it explodes, then another one spawns, aggghhh, lol!
