Second Floor. ”[Lock…]” Dim lights of white blinked twice and life found the Exo once again. He slowly opened his eyes to the pitch black around him and his body followed him into consciousness. It was dark and it was cold. ”Where am I?” ”[Alive.]” Lock pushed himself up against the wall he’d been propped against and looked around, taking in the dark hallway they were resting in. The room was dead. Anything freestanding had been knocked over but being a prison, there were very few objects left lying around. Save for a few powerless lanterns littering the floor, there was nothing else. The walls seemed bleak and lonely in the weak light and the stars hanging outside cracked windows seemed distant. The chamber from earlier was no where to be found. Tremors. ”What happened? Did you carry me out here?” ”[Both of you…]” ...Both… Lock scanned the room a second time when a trail of white smoke caught his eye. Ether trailed from the edges of a motionless body. ”Vahn. Damn it…” He started to move but pain flared from his chest and forced him back against the wall. It felt as though someone had hit him with a nova bomb. ”Shit!..” He heaved, pressing his hands to his chest and looking himself over. ”What the…” Finally inspecting his own wounds, he noticed the large black hole cut into his jumpsuit over his chest. The fabric had been frayed as if by fire and the metal underneath was heavily charred. The smell of burnt metal finally caught his nose. ”Aaa -blam!- you Dez.” ”[I had to move you both. You two were out cold and we were running out of time.]” Sky paused. ”[We are running out of time.]” ”The hell… why didn’t you just leave me?” ”[I’m not leaving either one of you behind. Besides, you were mumbling… something. I don’t know what you were trying to say but you were still alive. And Vahn...]” Sky turned to look at the unconscious Fallen Captain. Lock followed her gaze, his glowing eyes throwing weak light over the body. Vahn’s chest was struggling to rise and fall as ether slipped between cracks in the bandages around his wounds. It seemed Sky had done more than simply move them from one place to another. She’d did her best to stitch him up however, judging by the way he was still bleeding ether into the air, the bandages were doing little more than slowing Vahn’s impending death. Even Lock could tell that he was slowly slipping away and although Sky was trying to ignore it, he could see the realization clearly in her eyes. Sky continued, seeming to distract herself from Vahn’s struggle. ”[I was growing tired so I put you both down here and scouted out ahead.]” She nodded into the dark. ”[Through that door there and up the flight of stairs. That is the third floor.]” ”Cypher’s floor.” Lock answered a question that hadn’t been asked. His eyes swept from Vahn to Sky. ”[The floor is empty, at least the areas I have explored. I didn’t see Cypher or any of the other inmates.]” ”How are you holding up?” Lock nodded toward the bandages around her forearms and the one covering her hand. ”[I’ll be fine. None of the wounds are deep.]” ”Right…” Lock nodded. The situation was dire, even more so than before. From the start their entire escape plan had been botched and now here they were at the foot of the third floor and two of them had already kissed death. To make matters worse, the ambush had killed more time than Lock had prepared for and now he found himself racing against the clock. Not just him but Vahn as well. Sure they weren’t the best of friends but the man had his uses and without him, Lock wasn’t sure they would have made it out of the chamber alive. If they didn’t move and get him help soon, Vahn was sure to die. ...Not that I'd really care but... Lock looked to Sky for a few silent moments before making up his mind. He gripped at his chest, doing his best to ignore the artificial pain wracking his body, and pushed himself to his feet. ”[You need more rest Lock.]” ”We don’t have time.” Lock replied standing now. One hand was pressed against the wall for support. ”Look… we have maybe two ‘docs at the most before the Queen arrives and if we’re not out of here by then… we’ll be stuck here forever. Not to mention Vahn is going to die.” He met Sky’s gaze. It remained unwavering. ...Impressive… ”There should be an ether storage bank somewhere on Cypher’s floor. Hopefully with spare masks.” ”[I know where it is.]” Lock raised a brow. ”You do?” ”[Unlike someone…]” She gave Vahn a look and chuckled. It was as lighthearted as she could manage. ”[I memorized your map of the prison.]” Lock nodded with a smile. ”Okay… okay. So we’ll hit the bank and get ourselves some spare ether. If the rest of the floor is in fact empty. It’ll be a cakewalk to the shipping docks. We should be out well before the Queen arrives.” He looked to Sky. ”Sound like a plan?” ”[What of Randar…]” She didn’t want to remind him but she understood the frail human to be of importance to Lock. For whatever reason his safety was of the Exo’s concern. Lock looked over to see a small figure huddled over himself. He was shaking. ”[He’s been quiet ever since we left the room. Quiet and obedient.]” Lock simply stared at him for a few moments trying to gauge how he was doing before deciding to say something. ”Randar.” His voice carried, echoing off the empty halls and caught the Human’s attention. Pale blue eyes turned toward the pair, the color reflecting off the lights from Lock’s own. ”I’m… I’m fine…” He finally said when he noticed they were waiting on him. ”Just a little shaken is all… everyone’s…” He trailed off. Lock picked it up for him. ”Yeah I know... It sucks but we have to get moving… alright?” Randar nodded. *Continued below...*

*Continued from above.* --- The Prison of Elders. Third Floor. Lock wound up his kick and sent his heel through the door marked “Ether”. The metal was torn from it’s hinges and tumbled into the dark. It landed against a shelf holding the precious capsules, knocking most of them to the ground. He stepped inside and looked around. This bank was one of the smaller ones in the prison, more of a stop along the way for the ether and its trip from the tip into the bellies of the Fallen. All ether was drained from their Prime Servitor and sent to the lowest floor where most of the Fallen inmates resided. Not surprisingly, none of the banks on this floor had been looted thanks in part to the fact that the Queen liked to keep the Fallen population separated from her more ruthless prisoners. Sky would have more than enough for Vahn and herself. ”Grab all the ether capsules you can carry, we’re probably not going to find another bank and regardless, we don’t have the time t- shit…” The prison shook and more loose capsules clattered to the floor. The tremors were steadily getting worse and not just because the four of them were much closer to the impact site. Lock was worried that the rest of Cypher’s floor had already been turned into shrapnel. They’d been lucky enough to avoid any depressurized areas of the prison but judging by how events were unfolding, he knew their luck would run out eventually. They had to be careful what doors they ventured through from here on out… but they also had to hurry. The Queen and her reinforcements would be all over the prison soon. ”Hurry…” Sky placed Vahn gingerly against a wall and gathered a handful of the cylinders rolling around on the ground. Grabbing a mask off another shelf, she fixed it to Vahn’s face and pressed capsules into every junction available. Six of them hissed gas, pushing the life force of the Fallen back into the broken body of the Captain. His chest began to rise with a steady beat and Sky visibly relaxed. ”[It’ll take time but he should recover soon. The wounds will start to close up and his ether replenish shortly.]” ”Right. Well let’s keep moving.” Sky nodded and Lock joined her opposite Vahn, assisting the Captain in carrying the massive Fallen. With a pair of arms draped over both of their shoulders, they hoisted Vahn up and carried him through the door. Randar was waiting outside. ”What’s the word?” Randar nodded. ”The… the armory… it’s cleaned out.” ”Perfect…” Lock and Sky continued moving forward while Randar gave his report. Lock had sent him to do a little scouting both for convenience of time and to help get things off the man’s mind. He was clearly shaken up. And as for Randar running into guards… Lock wasn’t worried. The human had somehow managed to survive the chamber without doing much of anything. Randar continued. ”And… no Cypher… s-sorry…” ...No Cypher… Lock didn’t really know the man all that well. What he did know was that Cypher had a history… a history unfettered by those around him. He’d made his own choices in life, which was more than what most people could say these days. Everyone was either holding someone elses flag… or dying to another. Guardians, their light speckling the inner system were simply zombies brought back from the dead. They spoke for the speaker… who spoke for the traveler. Only their words were bullets and their books were the guns at their side. Cypher had found his own path. He was natural born and his actions were of his own. He landed himself in the Prison of Elders because he had no one to answer to and so he answered for anyone… and his answer was death. Lock initially tried to avoid the man but there was use in someone who would do nearly anything for the glint of glimmer. The man had weaseled his way into the escape plan and Lock didn’t resist. Only now… he was as good as dead. His entire floor had been shattered from the Fallen Ketch. Every hall the group entered was littered with doors sealed shut to keep the vacuum of space out. Tremors told of the death that awaited them outside walls only a few inches thick. One piece of debri could end the ride for them all… or most of them. Exo’s didn’t need pressurized space. Cypher did. Chances were… he’d tumbled into the eternal black the moment the Fallen began their attack. At least now he was free. Randar interrupted Lock’s thoughts, voicing a surprising concern. ”There was…. is… someone.” Lock stopped walking and turned to look at Randar with a confused look. ”What?...Who? A guard?” ”No…” Randar paused. It added effect even if he didn’t know it. ”A girl…” ”Who?” ”Sophia.” Continued in Chapter Eight or The Prisoner of Light
