Sepiks and I
o____________o
"Devil's Lair" he uttered in response to my inquiry. We had only just left the Tower and as per usual, I had not read the brief. Sku11Krusher and DaiZeee were used to my lack of organisation, as I had been assigned to their Strike team numerous times before, so the latter's response was quick and without complaint. "Where in the Traveler's name is that?" It was Sku11Krusher who spoke up this time. "Check the ship's navigation route; you can't still be this incompetent..." The insult did sting, but she had a point; I was fairly rubbish at being a Guardian. It was not that I didn't have the ability, nor was it a lack of intent. To be honest, I wasn't sure what it was. I seemed to find myself distracted most of the time by my surroundings, as if I were subconsciously looking for something- "Old Russia, huh..." -to complete me. It wasn't long before we found ourselves at our target's location. The clouds parted and we were met with the impressive sight of the ancient Cosmodrome, its walls reaching for the stars and harbouring the potential for great discovery. "One small step for man..." I muttered as my Ghost brought me to the surface. "What was that?" my helmet inquired in DaiZeee's voice. I didn't get a chance to come up with a smart-ass response as our sight was met with Fallen-Hive conflict. Rather than interfering and generating more chaos, we decided on avoiding the violence altogether in order to reach our objective before nightfall. Our Sparrows appeared on a whim and we were off. Sku11 took the lead, as always; rusted steel and concrete was narrowly avoided as our vehicles skimmed above the surface of the chilled Russian environment. Shots rang out but our attention was on the treacherous racecourse in front of us. Well, the other two were concentrating; a large, purple, circular shape to the left of me had clawed at my visual retention, dragging my sight from the obstacles in front of me for a split second. "What the Dreg are you doing!?" came Sku11's voice, but it was too late. The left protrusion of my Sparrow had caught the railing on a crippled pedestrian bridge and then it was gone. Cold air was my only companion as I tumbled. "That was only a Servitor" I reassured myself as my awkward flight path continued. Reality and the ground reintroduced themselves to me in the form of a painful collision. Two visored faces looked down at my snow and dirt covered form as I finally came to a halt outside of the doorway to the complex. "Who needs Sparrows when you've got momentum?" My teammates ignored me, shaking their heads as they entered the structure. The next portion of our objective went off without a hitch. It was the standard "defend Sku11's Ghost as it tears Fallen security systems to ribbons" routine, but I was oddly disappointed that none of the scavengers' tactical machines had shown themselves. "We good to advance?" echoed DaiZeee's gruff voice as he checked his ammo supplies. "Sure, sure, whatever" was my response as I gave the room one last glance. His head cocked to the side. "What is it?" "Isn't it strange that there weren't any Servitors in that firefight?" I couldn't see his face, but I did sense that he had raised an eyebrow. "Not really, no." The subject was dropped as the next doorway opened up into an industrial yard. A low rumble reverberated through the area as the familiar sound of a Fallen Skiff drew closer. "Walker..." Sku11 nodded as she reached for her sniper rifle. "This must be what we were sent here to dispose of." I had thought to myself; Walkers are large threats after all. The fight lasted longer than it should have. Shots fired, energy crackled and space magic erupted as we assaulted the spider-like enemy with everything at our disposal. DaiZeee, situated within a bombed-out structure to the right of the Devil Walker was pinned by the majority of the machine's artillery. He had his ward, so he was coping, but it was up to the rest of his fireteam to deal the final shots to the menace. Atop a roof towards the back of the yard, I picked up a heavy ammo pack dropped by a Vandal that had been recently sent into the void by my hand. Loading the ammunition into my rocket launcher, I aimed towards the Walker and positioned myself for the shot. The familiar sound of shock blades approached from behind, but there was nothing I could do; my Hand Cannon was holstered. I winced as the sound of Arc energy sliced through the air, but the pain never came. I slowly turned to see Sku11Krusher standing between the Fallen Captain and myself. The creature was dead with a Hunter's knife protruding from its forehead and a second buried into its chest for good measure. I went to thank my fellow Guardian, but something was wrong. Sku11 was shaking. I reached for her arm and that's when I saw her Ghost. After firing my heavy shot, the Walker was distracted enough for DaiZeee to deal the final blow. Metal screeched as the goliath collapsed and at last, the threat had been crippled. I glided over to Zeee's corner. "Are we done?" He replied in slight confusion. "Uh, no? We've come for Sepiks." "Right." I nodded. "You've got no idea what you're doing, do you? Whatever. Where's Sku11?" Zeee turned his attention towards where I had just come from. I looked down at my boots. "Her Ghost is dead..." He looked back to me but didn't respond. "A Captain's blade got to it whilst it was still by her side." DaiZeee took a step in Sku11's direction, though decided otherwise as he promptly turned towards a metal roller-door. "Let's finish this." he uttered as we moved forward. The halls ahead made it clear as to why this place was named Devil's Lair. The walls were covered with the Fallen House of Devils insignia, skulls littered the floor and a building sense of dread was ever present. My sense of guilt for what happened acted as my motivator and it was clear that anger was driving Zeee. Atop a set of stairs, was a large set of double-doors. Stepping forward, the doors parted for us and we were met with the sight of worship. Sepiks Prime. My missing piece. I let out an audible gasp. Such power encased within a flawless exterior. It was as if I'd found my balance as it was skilled, driven and powerful; a direct contrast to my clumsiness, lack of motivation and inferiority. It was as if I was whole for the first time. My daze was broken by the roar that erupted from DaiZeee as he charged forward with Auto Rifle in hand. I was torn between supporting my teammate and protecting this newfound adoration of mine. My Scout Rifle at the ready, I began to pickoff the followers, but the majority of my attention remained locked on the spherical god. My ears popped as a vacuum was generated. Sepiks locked into its offensive form and the defensive measures surrounding it dissipated. It was more than adoration that I felt, the entity in front of me held the capacity to complete my soul; it was a yearning. The confused happiness that I felt filled my body with the Traveler's light, announcing its presence with a low hum and radiant glow. Noticing the signs, Zeee turned to face me. "Do it!" I hesitantly nodded in response and leapt into the air. Channeling void energy to my palms, I remained within a moment of stasis. In front of me, the magnificent machine tilted itself as if questioning my motives, mirroring my own uncertainty. I looked deep into its optical receptor and in that moment, knew what I had to do. Glancing down, I apologised for my final blunder in DaiZeee's eyes. "I'm sorry..." My light shifted and I blinked into the void. In front of me, an energy pulsed and thrashed; the unstable essence of Sepiks almost seemed to call out to my soul. My Ghost shone into existence in front of me. "Don't worry, Little Light. I know what I'm doing..." I reached out a hand to link my energy with that of the writhing force in front of me. First contact was exhilarating as warmth coursed through my body, filling the hole in my being and surrounding my form with that of another. /Execute message - NewSource: "You. Complete. Me." /End We were whole. Activating our optical receptor, we looked down upon the confused DaiZeee who had halted his charge in order to evaluate the situation. "What did you do?..." Before we could respond, a Sniper round ricocheted off of our shell. Using the doorway as support, Sku11Krusher readied her next shot with vengeance burning in her eyes. She fired but we had already blinked to safety. They would not understand our bond. The two Guardians prepared their weapons as we concentrated the void energy within us, compressing it within our centre. Through an echo of machine chatter, a message was heard. "We are Sepiks Prime." A flash of violet light and we were gone; amidst the emptiness of the void. At ease, now that we were alone, Sepiks Prime made the observation that our environment was appropriate, for our surroundings flowed in silent contrast to us. We were an entirety where as the nothingness around us was just that. We were complete.
