Why doesn't Bungie utilize advertising space?

If you've been to this website for more than an hour, you would notice the Halo: Reach banner on the side of the forums that consistently reminds you to purchase the Noble/Defiant map pack (even though you probably already have it). Bungie is well-past their transition phase (a little over four months now. I'm unsure if they're still receiving money from Halo: Reach sales and whatnot, or if Microsoft is paying them to keep the banners on Bungie.net), and I was curious why Bungie doesn't utilize their advertising space? This entire area is pretty much open to getting that kind of content - and I know there would be many companies and people who would pay a pretty penny for the page impressions Bungie gets each day. I'm going to wager that Bungie is weird and doesn't like money, or they probably just don't enjoy having advertisements for external products on their site (they're ugly, security reasons perhaps?). If this is the case, and Bungie doesn't intend to allow others to advertise on their website, perhaps it could be used for better purposes: We've all seen the ideas that The Classifieds could take an appearance there; it would make sense, and fits perfectly. (Alongside Hylebos' thread, this could be used for a similar purpose.) If links to threads were provided in that small little column, not only would it boost the importance of The Classifieds, but it would also allow forum-goers to easily see things that they want to see. Maybe not group advertisements, but perhaps place a filter for threads in the Classifieds? Fits better sorting for this sort of circumstance. Maybe the next major site overhaul Achronos has been hinting at will contain this - something I'm looking forward to.

  • I'd like a trending topics section to be perfectly honest. Two each from the most popular (at any given time) forums. Let's say that once Destiny launches (obviously) the Destiny forum is very active, and the Septagon keeps it's new-found activity level, and the Flood stays its normal hyperactive self. Then you would have two trending topics from the Septagon, two from the Destiny Forum, and two from the flood. Now, because the advert is the same size as the TFT's, we can gauge how much room this is going to take up. Let's assume there's little "header" bar above each 'section' on the trending topics. That now takes up a total of about 7 of the top forum topics (out of 10). So with that leftover 10, we could have a list of 3 "Upcoming Events" (the three closest to happening; whether they're site-wide or just from a group you're apart of). Now we have two different things integrated into a space that was not previously used, and it takes up where the ad used to be. Then, on pages where it displays the TFT's, you can have a choice to toggle between those and the 'Bungie Toolbar' as it were, because they both take up the same space. Might make a thread with more ideas about a 'Bungie Toolbar' in a bit. Now I must go and fondle my Christmas presents. Edit 1: Making thread now.
