From what I've been observing about American society, there are a lot of people who are really desperate to be tolerant, that they sometimes forget what that means. They tend to tolerate minority groups and groups that are discriminated against, while ostracizing those that are part of the status quo or mainstream society. That being said, it comes to a point where some people are worried about their image as opposed to true tolerance.
