Though I think local coop is great it does have its downsides the console has to process two screens essentially doubling the power needed then you end up having to take stuff out to make it run as smooth so it ends up looking less than it is it just wouldn't be the same game

I'd love for Destiny to have local co-op! I also have a wife that enjoys games and it would be great to play together in the same room. Re: two screens and performance; it can depend on how the game is put together - if we're running two player views on the same screen we're effectively updating the same amount of pixels as one screen taking up the entire screen. The no, of pixels you'd need to update would be the same - and this number is more important than the number of screens we have. Assuming we're co-op in the same mission, we'd be playing against the same AI's - so we won't need twice the AI's if we're fullscreen. That said - rendering split screen can definitely add some performance cost but normally we wouldn't need twice the power to run the game. I do hope the developers pay some serious consideration to this feature as it would be great fun and as other posts point out is in line with what we had for Halo.
