Fireteams are awfully clunky for such a socially-oriented game

Currently, if you join a person's fireteam - even if you're standing right next to them in the world - it forces you go back to orbit and then reload the map area, often placing you leagues from the person who sent you the invite. Likewise, having your partner leave and disband the fireteam causes you to drop back to orbit and reload the area you were just in. Instead of feeling like a social MMO, it feels more like a traditional multiplayer game where you go to a lobby and form a group before undertaking a mission, and leaving that party forces you to exit back to the lobby again. It needs to be much more seamless, where I can drop in or drop out of a group dynamically without being forced to sit through a loading screen just to get back to the same area I was already in.

Agreed. With the emphasis being placed on some of the game’s social elements, fireteams need to be much easier. If you stumble across a couple other players in Explore mode, say in the middle of an event, you should be able to form a fireteam without even pausing the fighting – you shouldn’t have to navigate a bunch of menus and certainly shouldn’t have to o anything outside of the game itself. Taking two existing elements of the interface – using the D-pad for social functions and using a long press (press & hold) to access some functions – improving fireteam forming should be relatively easy. Long-press D-pad up – invite player to fireteam Long-press D-pad right – accept invitation Long-press D-pad left – decline invitation Long-press D-pad down – leave fireteam You should automatically form a fireteam when entering a Strike mission, regardless of your privacy settings. Voice coms with the entire team should function in the Crucible, fireteam or no. Yes, this is an FPS, but it’s not just an FPS. There are a lot of MMO/RPG elements in the game already – classes, character development, inventory, gear upgrades, a social space in the Tower, etc. One thing I don’t understand is how the Tower is supposed to function as a social space allowing you to form fireteams if the only way to communicate is via voice if you’re already in a fireteam. Text chat is going to be extremely cumbersome on a console, but some sort of communication solution is necessary.
