Mars: A Closer Look at Where You'll be Playing

A while back I decided to do a little research on the gameplay/concept art from Mars and believe that the playable area on Mars may be located in the Tharsis region. As you can see in the image linked, there are several clues that reveal more about the location of each picture: the ruined old station is named "Pavonis station" and if you look really closely the sign behind the Warlock says "Tharsis junction". According to wikipedia, Tharsis is the name for a huge volcanic plateau centered near the equator in the western hemisphere of Mars and is home to some of the largest volcanoes in the solar system. 'Pavonis' being Pavonis Mons, a large shield volcano located in the Tharsis region. It is the middle member of 3 volcanic mountains, collectively known as the "Tharsis Montes". There are even some who think that they entire region may be one giant volcano. So with all of this in mind, it definitely seems that we'll be either in or around the Tharsis region. We should get a rather nice view of Olympus Mons, the second tallest mountain in the solar system. So, when we finally get to Mars, be sure to bring your best hiking boots... :)

  • Since this was already necrobumped I'll try to keep it slightly on-topic. The Red Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson is said by Arthur C Clark to be the best there will ever be about terraforming Mars. High praise from a grand master of sci fi! Robinson describes the geology and landscape of Mars with accuracy and detail. It paints an awesome picture of terrain and how terraforming it would take place. Where the seas would form, how to heat up the atmosphere, how life would grow on a barren planet. It's mostly hard sci fi (sorry, no Traveler) and it's a stupendous read for those curious about Mars.

              • As much as I hope they use the geographic qualities and topography of Mars, Actual, I doubt that they will for freedom of creativity. It would be nice for us to climb Olympus Mons, however, it's a HUGE geographical feature. If they made it into a playable area, I doubt the whole of the mountain would be available to explore, unless that's the only place we can go. I can only guess, of course, and that guess comes as somewhat of a assumption, that they would keep to the time tested format of having several "features" or key areas commuted by large, vast and almost empty, landscapes connecting them. This serves two key purposes : 1. It saves memory (if you have intricate settings spaced reasonably apart, the memory can "forget" those features to make room for new ones, somewhere on the horizon.) 2. It adds playtime (similar to grinding gear, items, or whatever repetitive motion injury that has been inflicted upon us, the gamers, physical distance and travel time play a huge part in gameplay time. It's an action that's necessary to get anything you want to get done, and a way to add something else that you wouldn't know you wanted to get done.) However, that's an awesome idea, and I would really be stoked if it were the case. Good thought, and great research.
Olympus Mons, the second tallest mountain in the solar system.
WHOA, for the longest time it was the tallest, what changed? Did we find something somewhere else I hadn't heard of? Edit to add: THIS? Doesn't count, imo.

                        • Wow. Really cool. I love how Bungie took real places in our world and redid them for the future im the game. Really really cool. They could of nust said hey. This is mars. Insert random area name. And been done. But instead they set this up really nicely. Well done sir.

                            • This is awesome man! you are the baws!!! I hope we get to go inside one of the these volcanoes, as in explore some of the volcanic caves. That sounds like a good time to me. Maybe have a raid or strike where the ground is falling apart and lava is spewing at your feet and you have to dodge it and kill aliens. mhmmm... Gonna be some good shite!!! -cheers
