Manifest Destiny? Could we be the Villains?

"Everything that belongs to us will be ours, but only if we create the capacity to receive it." Looking back at all the Destiny information we have made me think of what the story would be about. One key thing I noticed is man had a "Golden Age" that at some time ended and we were reduced to 1 city on Earth. I notice these phrases like: "Together we will take back all that we have lost." and I can't help but think we were once the invaders in this universe. We were the people taking over distant worlds then our advances got pushed back. Maybe that is why they keep coming after the last city, out of hatred for mankind's expansion. The text suggests that the humans (maybe a faction) feels entitled to the distant worlds from our golden age of mankind. Maybe these worlds belong(ed) to other races of aliens before us, maybe they got reclaimed. This is all a hunch mind you but what if we are the villain?

  • I don't think we were invaders at all. The story seems to take place solely in our solar system (Destiny twitter account states in our solar system and Geomancy points toward the planets in our solar system) which would likely mean we were entitled to them in some ways. Unless we found life our solar system's planets in the fiction, I don't think we were ever invading but likely populating/terraforming.

    • That does sound like a pretty good/cool idea. Although it wouldn't be very much fun to fight as a villain. I could something more along the lines of "we extended our power to far and unleashed an evil we could have never known, that is kicking our asses" to stick with the manifest destiny analogy - the native americans we were trying to remove on our push twards the west - turns out they have semi-automatic rifles and they are pissed enough to try and squash us like we tried to squash them. .... That just makes American History sound more depressing.

    • I like it. Sounds like a sci-fi film's premise but it can also work in a game with large in scope

      • I like the theory, but if it is anything like what the game is, time will tell.

        • This is a neat theory, and its plausible to think mankind got to greedy and now were paying for it some hundred years later. Do you guys think all the gameplay will happen on the same planet? Or will there be some sort of space travel in the game? Either way Im totally stoked!

        • It's all a matter of perspective. We were the villians in the Covenant's eyes. I love the idea of ruthlessly conquering the Galaxy though. That would make for a very fun game.

        • trouble is: being villainous might not help us remain 'social' though. why would we work together if we're the bad guys?

I think you're misunderstanding the message, it sounds more like we were the victims and we are reclaiming what we lost.

            • "Take back that which we have lost" implies defense not offense. It is still possible that we took it from some one else first but using that phrase to imply aggressors isn't exactly what I would expect. The first phrase on the other hand - "Everything ... will be ours" does imply some aggression and conquering. A sense of entitlement. But it could still be in the sense that the earth belonged to us and we will take it back. The leaked concepts said aliens invaded from the outer reaches of space. Even if we colonized the other planets in our solar system they could still be seen as more ours than the invading aliens. In summary, no definitive view but I still think we're on the defense.

                • I'm still in the process of developing my idea of who we are, the factions, the husk of a once great empire, the traveler. Been reading a lot of French history. You're definitely on to something, the idea of us being the invading, very interesting. My thoughts, which after I get some sleep I'll topicize, on it are vaguely this; I think manifest destiny played a huge role during the expansion of the empire, it fell due to infighting/powerstruggles and the we were indeed the villain but that is long gone. I'm seriously not trying to burst your bubble, that's just my own personal take on it

                • Maybe. My theory is a universe wide catasrophe that possibly made all planets inhabitable by humans, even earth (except for the last city, because it has the 'traveler' protecting it). If you'll notice most of the earth is covered in snow in the art... Just my theory. But yours sounds good too, better infact.

                  • I think you're onto something but it may not be as big as you expect it to be. Perhaps it's the manifest of all of us uniting toward one common goal. This actually proves the common theory around here that the 5 outside circles on the grid that was crafted just recently, reprsents the 5 different factions, and the major circle that eclipses all of the outer circles is actually the Last City on Earth. This "Manifest Destiny" could be that manifestation of all factions striving to save the one final city. I don't think it leads to the possibility of us having immigrated to Earth and colonized it and then started off fresh or something, I just think it's more of a push for the fact that we all have to work together on this because it's an MMO. Bungie's doing a good job pushing this MMO feel and the use of Cooperative gameplay. I don't think this clue is to point in any different direction.

Anyone have any comments on this? Someone also tweeted Manifest Destiny about Bungie. Can anyone find the tweet? Come on, how do you people interpret this information?
