Forum Moderators PLEASE read this post! for ours and YOUR sake

Personally i am tired of seeing all of these POINTLESS threads. my deffinition of pointless thead is: "hey guys i know the release date" "hey halo 2 got cancelled" almost any type of poll The list goes on and on but I cant possibly post all of them. My suggestion is that if you guys(the mods) see a particular topic being repeated OVER AND OVER sticky it! or put it into an FAQ. I'm not ordering people around, and if you guys consider this thread another "pointless" thread, than my mistake, I'm only trying to aid in clearing up the forum a bit. Thanks for reading, and responses/feedback would be nice -EDIT- also please acknowledge if you are a mod, the only one i know of is stosh, but i think theres another 1 or 2, also don't respond only if you are a mod, i would like feedback from everybody, and i want people to voice their frustrations with such irritating posts! •
the worst part about repeated therads is that people keep posting in them to tell the person who started the thread that its old or been posted before. they wouldn't be that bad if people didn't post in them because they would dissapear right away
This is the best post in this thread. Here's the deal. Right now, we have one forum, called the Underground, that's pretty much used for all Bungie-related discussion, b.net suggestions and Halo PC aside. That's a _lot_. Further, the membership here is huge. As Sketch pointed out in another thread, there have been 25,000 posts since the new b.net was launched. That's a crazy number of things to say in such a short time. It'd take a blind man to notice that there are a lot of repeated questions and whatnot on the forum. To be completely blunt- there is nothing anyone can do to slow this down. The fact is that the people that are truly "regulars" to a forum as popular as this one are the minority of the posters. The majority of the posters are people who are brand new, and are more interested in having their question answered rather than seeking an answer themselves. As such, when they see a forum, they post to it; regardless as to whether or not there's a FAQ link handy. The Game Informer scans whose threads have been deleted since I put up the "Do not post the Game Informer scans" sticky at the top of the forum are proof that people aren't as interested in reading the forum as they are in posting to it, and reading the direct replies. This isn't the first time it has been suggested that we take the most popular topics and force them into stickies at the top of the forum. While this seems like a good idea, it has its disadvantages. First, think about the wide variety of topics... [*]Covenant speculation [*]Forerunner speculation [*]The possible Forerunner-Human connection [*]What happened to Dr. Halsey and Kelly? [*]Flood Speculation [*]What weapons will be in Halo 2? [*]What are your favorite weapons in Halo 1? [*]Will the Halo weapons return in Halo 2? [*]What vehicles will be available in Halo 2? [*]Halo 2 screen and article discussion [*]Will Halo 1 maps return in Halo 2? [*]Dual wielding discussion [*]Non-Halo related discussion I could keep going. It'd be easy to completely fill up the first page of the forum with sticky threads. Or, let's say we compressed the topics: [*]Covenant Discussion [*]Human Discussion [*]Flood Discussion [*]Forerunner Discussion [*]Halo 2 Speculation [*]Halo Discussion Now we've gone and micromanaged the forum- only 6 threads in the forum, and unless it's not Halo related, you have to post to one of these. I'd give it a week before each of these threads became 40 pages long. Then, how much better would they be than the forum? Are you going to yell at some poor guy for not reading the 6th post on page 23? Then, say someone decides to spam one of the threads. We can't delete one post out of a thread, so do we delete the entire thread and start it over? It's a sticky situation, and it can be annoying, I realize. However, the answer is not to police the forum. Stosh and I have been asked by Bungie to take care of the flak, and we'd both hate to have to come down on the regulars for being rude because of a post they've seen before. So, your best bet is that if you see a post that's a repeat of something that's fallen off the first page, just skip it! You don't have to read every post on the forum. If it bothers you that much that someone asked a question someone asked earlier, then just ignore the thread and move on. Or, if you simply must respond to every thread you see on a topic, pick a good thread, and link to it for the person that repeated the question. If a thread becomes popular enough (note: not if a question is repeated, per se, but if a specific thread recieves a lot of attention), then stosh and I would be more than happy to pin it up so everyone can see it. So, if you want a single thread, try (gently) guiding visitors unfamiliar to the forum to a thread you like. Remember, guys, a thread might seem dumb or unnecessary to you, but it's not necessarily the same to the person posting it. Besides, I bet part of those reward systems that have been mentioned in the past involves being a helpful forumite. ;) I believe this situation to be temporary. Looming in the b.net forums' future is the addition of a forum search function. Also, Bungie is discussing the possibility of adding forums to help spread the discussion out a bit and make things easier to sift through. For now, I ask that you harden up a bit and give us a hand by not adding to the problem and being rude to other people on the forum. Thanks to each of you for your interest in the betterment of the forums, and thanks to each of you for voicing your opinion. I promise, things will get better with time, without stosh and I becoming forum -blam!-'s. =) Just so you all know, I'll be moving this thread to the Septagon in about 5 minutes.
