Maybe the Didact didn't survive.

I thought his voice at the end was him reflecting on the humans kicking his butt during their war 100,000 years prior. I don't recall the exact wording, but I assumed this was that or perhaps the weird "second form" thing the Forerunners take on when they die (Bornstellar talks about this in the beginning of Cryptum).

 • I think his speech implies that he is around after the end of Halo 4. "...I stand before you, accused of the sin of assuring Forerunner ascendancy... Of attempting to save us from this fate where we are forced to... Recede... Humanity stands as the greatest threat in the galaxy. Refusing to eradicate them is a fool's gambit. We squander eons in the darkness... ...While they seize our triumphs for their own. The Mantle of Responsibility for all things belongs to Forerunners alone! Think of my acts as you will. But do not doubt the reality. The reclamation... has already begun. And we are hopeless to stop it." It seems like the Didact survived his fight with the Chief and has returned to or been recovered by the Forerunner council and is now on trial for his actions. I'd say it's safe to assume he didn't die. In fact I think it was safe to assume that even without the epilogue.
I stand before you. Accused of the sin of assuring Forerunner ascendancy...
The "sin" is referring to the Didact trying to compose all of humanity as a way to wipe them out leaving the Foreunners as the top dogs with no competition.
Of attempting to save us from this fate where we are forced to... Recede...
The Forerunners weren't forced to recede after defeating Ancient Humanity. They were still at the height of their power. It was only towards the end of their war with The Flood that the Librarian began to realise that Forerunners were not meant to hold the Mantle after all.
We squander eons in the darkness... ...While they seize our triumphs for their own.
The Forerunners went into exile ("darkness") thousands of years ago ("eons") and humanity have begun to "seize" Forerunner technology for themselves, Huragok, slipspace drives, shielding etc. This only happened recently, not 100,00 years ago.
The reclamation... has already begun. And we are helpless to stop it."
Again, humanity only began "reclaiming" their rightful place in recent years, not when the were devolved back to glorified apes.
