OS X is Unix, so it comes prepackaged with Perl, Ruby, Python, among other scripting languages; has native SSH; etc. If that's all you're concerned about, I agree it's not the best choice, and you'd probably be better off getting a cheap laptop and slapping Ubuntu on it.
If you don't mind spending a little more, though, MacBooks are a nice option because they're lightweight, look nice, and the OS has a great UI.
