So I have 18.54885775
Should I round it to 18.6 or 18.5?
It's .04885775 away from 18.5, or .05114225 away from 18.6
So while it's obviously closer to 18.5, why am I told to round it to 18.6?
-edit-
In this case I need to round to the tenths
-edit2-
thanks for helping me out Flood
Posted by: Toxifies The reason whoever told you to round it to 18.6 is because they think 18.548 rounds to 18.55 which round to 18.6 but that's wrong. It should either stop at 18.55 or round down to 18.5 You can't keep rounding forever. It's like rounding 18.48 to 18.5 then rounding that to 19. It was closer to 18 than it was to 19 so that makes no sense.
Okay thanks, that's more or less what I was thinking. I hate second guessing myself, but I do it all the time because rounding hasn't been taught to me clearly enough. -edit- so yeah, thanks guys for helping teach me <3 [Edited on 01.08.2013 12:19 AM PST]

I've been told in most of my math classes to use two decimal places. You would end up with 18.55 because the 8 in the thousandths place causes the 4 in the hundredths place to round up to 5.

Depends on how many significant figures/decimal places you want to round to.
