Same thing I would if it was any other user: I would extend my respect, and participate in the community honoring which we will certainly construct. If it's someone who I consider a friend, I'd probably try to get in contact.

Feel really bad... I think as a community no matter how much he may have banned you. We would do something for him and his family even. Get him something, even visit if we could to say thank you for his service... It's the least we could do. I hope that never happens to one of them though I don't think we would want that to happen.

Wish him/her well, and hope for the best. In fact, if this happened to any of my longtime friends, actually I don't have any friends on here, so if any of the other users that have posted on here long enough to feel in some way associated to me, I would do what I could to help, as well as send them good words. It wouldn't be easy, most if not all of the Mods have spoken to me, or helped me in some way, as is the case to a lot of the senior members here, so I would do what I could to be there for them, in whatever capacity is appropriate for the users of B.net.
