Do you think they are considered weird by the rest of our youthful society?
Every other teenager I talk to likes music such as Dubstep, Katy Perry, Among other stuff in the rap, hip hop or pop genre.
When I say I like the bands like The Rolling Stones, David Bowie or Led Zeppelin they give me strange looks as if I'm a creature from mars.
So do you think this is a cliche of other teenagers, or is it true?

My music tastes have fluctuated but there was a brief time where I was caught up in the oldies. Glad i've moved on.
You'll come back, they always do. I keep them in my playlist for a reason. I rarely come across modern music with the same emotion, meanings, and feeling as say a Moody Blues song, or a Who song. When I do, it's usually a pretty obscure band and I get sad because of it.
Lyrics and vocals are the big things for me. I saw Rush a few weeks ago and technically they were fantastic. I just prefer something I can get into. It's odd. I respect the superior "music", but the variety of emotions and styles that go into Pop Punk music have sucked me in.
See, I'd kill to see Rush because of the themes and emotion present. Something about the stories Geddy Lee tells. See, Pop Punk isn't bad. Bands like No Doubt and The Offspring are fun to listen to, but I don't really get out what I get out of Pink Floyd, or Rush, or The Who, etc...
It's understandable, my friend's the same way. It's just two different aspects of music I think. I live in Jacksonville so I like to go to the bars and see local punk bands, i'm generally not referring to bands you've heard of (not trying to sound like a hipster). It's cool seeing the effort poured out into these small gigs.
Pop Punk is Popified Punk like No Doubt and the Offspring. Bands you see in a bar generally are not Pop Punk, they are just Punk, just a different kind. But really, in the end it's up to taste. I can throw on Dark Side of the Moon specifically, or Phil Collins, or The Who and just chill for hours. Listening to DSotM while lying in bed with your eyes closed is kinda surreal. Who needs pot when you got a strong mind, eh? See, I dig high energy stuff too. I went to a Judas Priest concert last year, and that kicked serious ass. Metal concerts in general have a lot of energy, a lot of power, and are a lot of fun. I would not mind going to see more bands but we don't have any local bars here that have bands play. All we got in my area are sports bars, and I am not driving down to the LA area to have a beer and see a local band. It's just way to far. Maybe one day once I get out of my area and out into the great US.

Yes you are weird. Get with the gorram times OP. Queens are ded, rolling stones are old.
Posted by: albert staircase Know the feel OP. Most kids in my school who listen to Classic Rock are freaks, nerds, and weirdos. Thing is it's not so black and white. Everyone listen up, this is coming from a social (read: POPULAR) guy who knows about high school politics. I'm taking a "History of Rock n Roll" class, elective. Most of the people in here are characters. What I mean is they're the anti-social freaks, don't shower, pale as hell, hate on the popular kids. Some are goth. Some of nerds, low self esteem. Most people in HS who proudly wear Led Zeppelin shirts and things of that nature are usually weird. But it's not so cut and dry like I said...not so black and white Yeah if you hate on new music don't be surprised when you don't have friends. I love old school rock n roll, but I love new music too. Dubstep, Trance, Rap, Hip Hop, Kanye West, Taylor Swift I LOVE ALL THAT -blam!-. This is coming from a cool guy who goes to parties and has 0 trouble talking to girls. My interpretation is be able to connect with others.....so if you're talking to a cute softball player...and she looks like she listens to Rap, don't start talking about Mick Jagger cause shances are she don't know who the -blam!- he is. Don't be surprised when you discuss old school music to people like her, and get looks However old school R&B, like Motown and those funk artists, everyone knows them. Lot of my boys listen to old school rock and roll, and during practice we always listened to Guns n Roses, Aerosmith, Zeppelin. It's unfortunately the freaks who don't shower, and wear the same ACDC shirt everyday, who give honest guys like the OP a bad name
Best post in the thread !!
Posted by: albert staircase
Posted by: MarkFanous I'm actually a huge fan of dubstep and hip-hop and music on the radio and whatnot. But over the summer I somehow got into classic rock and other old songs through pandora. by far the best thing that could've happened to me. The older music is so much better!! and has way more meaning than today's songs about sex and money and all. I still listen to dubstep and all, but I prefer the older stuff now and have adjusted my car radio to stations that play older music instead of the new stuff. You're normal OP!! It takes awhile for people to see the light.
Why don't you just mix it brah Brb listening to The Beatles and Kanye West back to back....feelsgoodman. A lot of rap today is sampled from older music anyway, so you're still listening to the same badass tracks. Rap is just poetry spat over it
I actually recently discovered a mash-up of Cavin Harris - Feel so Close to you and Guns and Roses - Sweet Child of mine. It sounds so sick. brb will look for more.

I'm in a kickass high school band and people don't give me weird looks when I listen to classical.

Most people who really do like most all music will go through a time, could be a long time, exploring the classics.
I am still not done. I took a Survey of Rock and Roll class last year and I loved it. Though my tastes are always growing, I used to hate Metal when I was kid, now it's almost all I listen to. Even then my tastes for Metal is expanding. I find my self listening to darker stuff, Occasionally Pantera even. Yet I still go back and Listen to the Who, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Fats Domino, The Temptations, Earth Wind and Fire, and Steely Dan. Here is the thing chaps, especially you younger chaps. Musical tastes always evolve. You look at my Pandora playlist you will see a lot of different things. From Phil Collins to Dick Dale, Tchaikovsky, Marshall Tucker, Queensrych, Offspring, William Shatner, and even an epic score playlist. It's not about fitting in with music, it's about listening to what your ears enjoy. Virtuosity comes in all shapes. From the Scrams of Halford, to the smoothness of Pete Townshend, and the kickass heavy hitting vocals of Bruce Dickenson. Just listen to what you dig, and dig what you listen to. Quiet night? Turn on some deep tracks like Eminence Front, or all of Dark Side of the Moon. Want some energy? Listen to some Thrash punk, or Alt Rock. Want something Mellow? Throw on Knights in White Satin. Just sit back and enjoy.
Bro, the Doors is one of the most awesome bands that ever existed. I have a complete collection album, or used to before I lost it. The only shame is that you can't sing most of it out loud without getting strange looks. 'RIIIIDE THE SNAAAKE..'

You never see Slash throwing the horns. No Angus Young, no Pete Townshend, not from Jim Morrison.

Who cares what teenagers or any other person listens to? Just enjoy your own thing and don't worry about it. Taste in music doesn't mean a thing.
