May I ask Bungie a question since they no longer run the Halo...
Universe?
My question to Bungie is this. How come, aside from Halo CE, was black not an option for your Spartans matchmaking color scheme? You always gave us a semi-black. or a steel color. I have always wondered this, and the fact the the trend continues in Halo 4 (I know it is not your game, just simply pointing it out), makes me wonder if it is a coding problem or something?

Maybe certain textures on the armors would not appear if the color was completely black.

Probably because it would give an unfair advantage in non-team matches. You could hide in the shadows pretty effectively. TOO effectively.

Pretty much what everyone else said. When this question was brought up after Halo 2's released, it was stated that black just matched too well with the shadows.

That something is associated with a color doesn't mean that the color is copyrighted. Also the pink ribbon is copyrighted for breast cancer research, not the color pink. And the red white and blue in the flag of the USA can't be copyrighted but the flag itself can with those colors, so that nobody else may use those colors on a similar flag. OT: shadows are black to. Being someone that prefers a stealthy approach (sometimes,) the shadows can be pretty dark sometimes. Having completely black armor would just pretty much be a game breaker, as you can practically become invisible in the shadows. Bungie probably feared that some people would exploit this, and just opted not to have it put in. Thus, the dark gray we have now.

Because of the way Bungie made their shadows. They use baked shadows, not real time shadows. So if a model goes from a light source into the baked shadow, then the model just gets darker. This mimics a shadow effect. Which is why black is not an option. It would be very hard to see someone hiding in the shadows.
