If 2 Spartans Were to Have a Child ...

Do you think the Spartans augmentations would have any effect on their offspring? If so, what would the outcome of it be do you think? [Edited on 08.27.2012 3:31 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Spartan1995324 The MAIN problem here is well...getting it on. To make a baby, you have to WANT to get down and dirty.
Pretty sure that if you can kill few hundreds of covenant and flood, you can also get yourself to hump something.

 •
Posted by: BubbaBishop21 Spartan II augmentation altered molecules. If you were to do that it would HAVE to be genetic, otherwise your body would not recreate the augmentations during cell division, and the augmentations would only last until the majority of the augmented cells had died of natural causes. seeing as the Spartan II's were children when abducted, they would have had to grow, which means that cells had to divide, meaning the traits were genetic.
You do know that a lot of those things were implants as well right? Their bones were grafted with some metal. That CANNOT be passed down. It's like saying Kat's prosthetic can be passed down.
Posted by: BubbaBishop21 During reproduction, you give half of the child's genetic structure, and Spartan II's would have abnormal genetics, resulting in three possible outcomes.
Humans have 36 chromosomes. Spartans still have 36 chromosomes. The gametes would still match up. Where is the source for the genetic augmentations. I believe you are right, but I'd like to see it.
Posted by: BubbaBishop21 1. The child is incompatible with the mother, and is miscarried early on, if at all conceived.
The OP is asking if TWO Spartans IIs were to have a child with each other. Something like John and Kelly as an EXAMPLE. Besides, as long as both parents of are the same species it should work. Normal humans produce abnormalities anyways, and offspring can be produce between closely related species anyways (e.g Liger). Since a Spartan is human, and has BETTER genetics than most humans, it's reasonable to say that the child would have better genes.
Posted by: BubbaBishop21 2. There is a child, but the genetic alterations did not mesh properly with the genes of the mate, resulting in a crippled child similar to those who were "washouts" of the original program.
Spartan 1s had kids and they seemed fine. As stated before, since Spartans are still human the gametes will still have 23 chromosomes, allowing them to pair with another human gamete to create a zygote with the full 36 chromosomes.
Posted by: BubbaBishop21 3. There is a child, and it has the same genetic capabilities as the Spartan II parent, however due to not having a natural reinforced skeleton or post gene therapy altered developmental glands, the child ends up with either elephantitis or some other issue where the bones cannot support muscle mass or other results of the gene tampering.
The child receives the superior genes of both parents (because the OP asked what happens when Spartans IIs have children together). Therefore the child is already a candidate for Spartan II augmentations. Whatever augments are passed down (because not all of them will be, like the skeleton) will not be as intense. This is shown with Spartan Is, and their children (Spartan 1.1s). Since the child already has good genes, then they can most likely handle these "watered down" augments.
Posted by: BubbaBishop21 In case 2 and 3, the child would also most likely be sterile.
It's possible. The MAIN problem here is well...getting it on. To make a baby, you have to WANT to get down and dirty.

 • I'm fairly certain that Spartan II's cannot reproduce, for a few reasons, but I'll put the main one. Spartan II augmentation altered molecules. During reproduction, you give half of the child's genetic structure, and Spartan II's would have abnormal genetics, resulting in three possible outcomes. 1. The child is incompatible with the mother, and is miscarried early on, if at all conceived. 2. There is a child, but the genetic alterations did not mesh properly with the genes of the mate, resulting in a crippled child similar to those who were "washouts" of the original program. 3. • I am the child of two Spartans sent back in time to squish a bug and change the course of history so that the covenant never existed.

 • To everyone who thinks that "suppressed sex drives" means they can't have kids, the suppressed sex drive refers to the instinct of living things to reproduce. Spartans don't feel that. They can, they just don't feel the desire to. Why else would we not ever see Spartan couples emerging at some point. Spend your entire life getting to know the same 30 people and some hook ups would be inevitable if they still felt the drive to do so. However, they don't.

Correct me if I'm wrong about that.
Wrong. One implant had this as a RISK.
2% of subjects acquire elephantiasis. Suppressed -blam!- drive.
Risk, aka, CHANCE, aka, not 100% sure to happen, and could happen as a very minor or very major suppressed drive.

 • Well, the children of the Spartan Is; 'Spartan 1.1s' were purportedly different to regular children. I imagine Spartan 2.1s would be similarly better than normal children, if not more so.

 •
Posted by: mojeda101 I remember reading somewhere that it is impossible for a female Spartan to give birth. The fact that their bones have been hardened to be as hard as steel and stay in place, the baby wouldn't have room. The bones wouldn't expand like normal humans due to the augmentations.
They could still have a C section.

 •
Posted by: im the next halo No it's genetic. It should be, especially the S-II augmentations. Because it increases heavy parts of the body, which should at least be a phenotype or genotype to the newborn. At least.
What ?! None of the augmentations could or would be passed onto the child. Those augmentations were made purely to augment that individual, not his/her DNA, or gametes. Anything that's coded in the DNA which in turn is in the chromosomes, which then in turn are in the gametes or ovaries will be passed down. In any case the child will just be a normal human. Its impossible for those augmentations to be passed down. Spartans never lost their sex drive. During augmentations there was only a chance it would be suppressed.

 •
Posted by: LordUnreal If I remember right there was a chance for the augmentations to make them sterile, but I could be wrong. I have not read the fall of reach for a while.
Chance, which directly means it is not a 100% for sure thing. Besides, the thing was "suppressed sex drives", not removed.
Posted by: Timmie The Spartans have their "sex drive" removed. So, I foresee a lot of viagra being ordered by them if this were the case.
Completely and utterly false. Not once is it said the augmentations remove the sex drive. There is a chance it is suppressed, but it was never removed.

Didn't Maria retire and have a family in Korea?
I was thinking along the lines of Maria when I posted this. But I don't think Spartans are allowed to quit the program.
I'd always assumed she was on a special mission from ONI, settled down and knock out a few kids just to see if anything does transfer. At least that's the best I can come up with to explain why a perfectly good Spartan wouldn't take part in an on-going war for humanity's very survival.
Sigh. you don't 'quit the program'. You retire from the UNSC. Yes, it's be damn rare to see happen, but I don't see it as being impossible. "Perfectly good spartan" We don't know the details. And the likelyhood is, Maria fought in the battle of Earth.
Well she was obviously fit enough to test out the Chief's armour so I doubt there was anything physically wrong with her. And I didn't say she quit the program.
You know this guy is right. Maria jumped from low orbit and took on ODST and won while testing the Mark.VI and don't use the maybe she has PTSD. Would you give the most advanced and deadly armor to somoen who has PTSD or something along those lines? -Nate'

I think it would be really awesome if the child had the strength of a spartan at such a young age.
