The Hunter of the Mind

*This is my first attempt at writing a short story that's replaying in my head. Forgive me if it seems out of context or poorly scripted. I need to work on that* The Hunter of the Mind. She ran. That's all she could do. Breath fogging her helmet as her heart pounded in her chest threatening to burst forth from her armor. Heavy metal footsteps and squeals of mechanical life chimed behind her but she dare not look back. I told you this would end up getting us killed guardian! She ignored the ghost speaking from her backpack. Now wasn't a time to talk but for action instead. Besides she hated admitting he was right. She was a Hunter trained in use of Solar light. She had been exploring the Black Garden alone hoping to uncover it's secrets. She had heard tales of a powerful Handcannon that could be discovered there if you were brave enough to face the creators the lurked there. The Hunter nimble and quick footed dodged a Vex Goblin while simultaneously throwing her knife into the chest of another. I gotta find cover quickly she thought. Eyes darting to each rocky outcropping. BOOM! A deafening explosion of pain and light shot through her side of her face and sent her tumbling to the ground. A slight shimmer in the air as the Vex Minotaur appears before her. Her mind races as she draws her Eyasluna handcannon out and levels it at the Minotaur "click" Empty mag. With no time to curse she scrambles backwards while the ground shakes with each blast from the ancient war machine coming down on her. I've got to get away! I'm not going to die in a place like this. I've seen worse... just then her hand finds empty air instead of smooth stone. The sickening feeling of gravity taking hold as her body slips into the chasm below. Nimble as cat she twisted in mid air and lands squarely on her feet in the valley below. Vex tech surrounds as well as ancient Ruins. Are you alright? The ghost says floating from her backpack. I've spent years looking for you Guardian let's not die in a place like this shall we? As you wish "little light" she says teasing the ever present ghost that rescued her what now seemed like a lifetime ago. She stepped forward, the distant sounds of the Vex Minotaurs high above her gave her no cause for concern. For now she was enthralled in the gravity of the new find. Giant pillars of stone jetted up from the earth in every direction. Moss clinging to stone and metal alike. Her eyes finally settled on the glowing portal at the far end of the valley. "I wonder where that leads" she thinks just as two Vex Goblins step through the portal. "well we'll figure that out later" she says aloud as she slams a fresh cartridge pack into her handcannon and levels it at the oncoming Vex. Two more follow, then four. Then six each. Each one crumbling to piles of rubble under the skilled shooting only a Gunslinger Hunter can master. Already with each shot she can feel her light restoring her energy. The power that surges through all guardians granting them Godlike abilities. *click* "Mother fu... She catches herself cussing as the Handcannon is again out of ammo. She takes a knee and begins to reload again when two Vex Minotaurs make their way through the portal. Red eyes and arm cannons trained on her. ...cker" she leaps backwards trying to get to cover just as the first volley of plasma cracks the stone she had been kneeling on moments ago. A her eyes scowl and she levels her cannon at the closes Vex and she begins to count 1...2...3...4...5... With each count the dull rhythm of her cannons recoil perfectly controlled in skilled hands. The Vex Minotaurs twitch and stumble backwards as each well aimed shot takes pieces of their armor off one by one slowly reducing them to a pile of rubble. "Well, that was easy!" she says enthusiastically cheering from the center of the valley. She turns and looks up at the Vex high on the cliff above her and proceeds to give them an old earth hand gesture. from my database records, that hand gesture is rather... Rude. says the ghost floating beside her head. "What could they possibly do now? We've won! Let's find that legendary Handcannon now shall we?" A flash of light temporarily blinds them both as they turn toward the portal. Two pillars of light have formed and we're now pulsing as the air shimmered in front of them. Another pulse and temporary blindness pangs her eyes from the intensity. you had to say it... She didn't give the ghost a time to speak again before grabbing him and forcing him into her backpack. Mechanical roaring echoes across the valley as the Vex Mind appears and shields itself. The world around her shakes as explosions erupt around her. The ancient Moss covered machine knows no mercy as each blast craters the stone where she once was standing. With her back pressed tight to the rock wall she goes to reload and find nothing. Her ammo pouch is empty. Silently cursing herself for leaving the tower without her Zhalo Supercell she then pulls the weapon Cayde had given her from her back. The 1000 yard stare, a pitted and warn sniper rifle that had seen countless battles before her time but struck with the fury of a Sunbreaker Titan. "Why is my heart pounding so hard?" she thought as with each dull thud echoed in her ears. Just then the stone behind her shoulder begins to glow red and blasts away sending shrapnel slicing through the air. The Vex Mind hammered relentlessly with its cannons, pounding the stone into Slag. She rolls out of the way, kneeling she find the eye in her scope and squeezes off a round. The bullet ricochets off the floating shield surrounding the ancient war machine. Lighting cracks and darkness decends around her as objects materialize before her eyes. Precursor Vex, summoned from another time and space drop down beside her and in unison begin to fire in her direction. "this is bad" she says allowed and hears a muffled "I told you so" come from her pack. She slowly backs up looking at the chasm to her right and the stone wall protecting her from the Undying Mind on her left. She back peddles further, trying to get some distance between her and her enemies as she grabs her only grenade... She never saw the step behind her. Too much chaos. But that was all it took, she lost her footing and falls backwards as her grenade tumbles into the inky blackness beside her. "Well I guess we won't be going home after all. At least we won't have to hear any more of Caydes jokes!" she chuckles to herself inches away from the red hot blaster of the Precursor war machine in front of her. Three orbs of black void light streak across the sky. Each one erupts in a chain sequence engulfing the Vex below. Erased from existence. A figure blinks down from the sky, clad in a black helmet and adorned in Vestments of battle. She never even saw the other guardian appear as a friendly hand reached in front of her face. The hulking Titan looked down on her, his hand offered in help. She wondered if she was dreaming. The black helmed figure stood guard at the end of the wall as the Titan patiently awaited her hand. "Please mam, let me help you" he said in a kind but commanding voice. She took his hand he lifted her up effortlessly. "are you alright? Why are you here alone? Where is your fireteam?" the question danced around her head unintelligible and she manages to stammer a response "I'm alone" What in the hell are you doing here alone? The Titan asks? we can do this later, right now we have bigger problems said the man in the Black helmet. His arms pulsing in pure void light. Can you fight? What? I said can you fight? She looks at him and nods her head. He thrusts a pile of ammo into her hands and and says "good" before turning away. The Titan looks at the Warlock. "So how do you want to go about this? I suggest a strategic advantage of height verses..." You know I don't have time for that *Clank* his armor courses with solar energy and a flaming hammer appears in his hand. "I thought that was the approach you'd take" says the Warlock rater coy. But the Titan never heard a word. He was charging into battle, flaming hammers thrown in every direction exploding in brilliant flame. "Well I don't know about you love, but I'm going to go have a bit of fun" with that the Warlock Teleports straight into the air and sends deadly void bombs reigning down on the enemies below. A shiver flows through her body. Eyasluna begins to glow and fire erupts around her. "This is my fight" she grins as she steps into the battle... The End? You decide. Well I hope you all liked it. Just a short story that popped into my head. Based off the time me and a Titan helped a random Hunter who's party had ditched her. Sorry for any spell errors or lame paragraphs lol just a quick story before bed. Thanks everyone! *edit There's a lot of spellchecker errors I need to fix. I will tomorrow after work. Sorry about that*

 • Very good story! Besides the spelling (which you have pointed out) it's hard to tell when someone speaks and when it's thought, if it's thought italicize it if not the put it in quotation marks. It will make it easier for the reader. Other than that I love the way the story is laid out and the detail is awesome
