As much as I love them, there's little reason to bring a hand cannon into the wild these days. And sure, they can still be effective, but the lack of accuracy at medium range and nearing zero effectiveness beyond that makes them a poor alternative to scout and pulse rifles. I'm not saying they should be on par with scout rifles at range, for example, but the recent nerf was excessive and introduced to element of luck in hand cannon use that is just not fun. This applies to pvp too. So while they did need reigning in somewhat (mostly exotics in the Crucible), the current solution is not the answer. Nerf the class in other ways if needs be, but I'm tired of having bullets miss completely when sighted dead on the targets head at distances a pistol should be effective in. So come on, Bungie - there's room to give them a buff without stepping on other weapon's toes.

The range fix/damage falloff was a good fix. That worked and was needed. The realignment nerf (after firing a shot, when it takes an extra moment to realign the gun even AFTER the recoil) really kills me... literally, at least in crucible. It's especially bad on the Hawkmoon, where even with max accuracy it STILL pulls to the right if you rapid fire. Hand Cannons should be well suited to short and mid range. I use an Imago Loop, but it has maxed out Stability, and that's the only to make sure the shots go where I aim.
