Not having fun with modern gaming

Hey so i don't know about y'all but I'm getting tired of how gaming is now a days and wondering if you all feel the same. I like old school games like snes and sega genesis
thats how I got into gaming
But now every year it kinda pushes me further and further away. For example I used to as a child/teen have this big list of new games I wanted for the year and my parents would deliver and I would have about 10+ new at the time games for PS2 but as an adult I can barely afford like 3 games with added on DLC passes and now Microtransactions. And it's kinda odd that I'm looking forward to Fallout 4 it's not because I like the series
personally I dislike it
but because it's pushing gaming as a whole forward with console mods and it gets me exited but sad because companies will find ways to get money out of it. TL;DR I am a sad gamer losing his interest because of both price and quality of games recently coming out.

  • You kno like every game you can get a pirated copy, i'm not saying do it... but if your strapped for cash, there only like a click away. Think of it more like a try before you buy, get every game in existance, try them, the ones you like BUY, the rest delete... because it's kinda illegal ya know

    • Gaming was never meant to provide you with a lifetime's worth of entertainment... I can remember looking at my console with all the newest games sitting next to it- wondering why I didn't care. As it turns out... being able to enjoy gaming is dependent on who you play with. Simply going out of your way to find someone who passionate about something does a lot to keep you interested. An example is I convinced someone to play Halo Reach with me earlier this year, they were sulking about the idea and being a b**** about it, up until we entered forge and started having fun with creating and playing with levels in new and interesting ways. We had fun and proved that a**hat wrong! If all else fails... look into getting free game development tools and try your hand at creating a game. It's a steep learning curve but its worth it when you get the hang of it.

    • I'm putting all my money into Dark Souls 3 and the Doom(4) reboot. If Doom fails, I'll probably just quit gaming all together.., The first 2 were great, the 3 was garbage and now I'm just hoping my favourite video game publisher won't ruin it.

Fur me it's not so much the price but the lack of innovation. As a kid it seemed everything was new because, at least on an individual level, more was. It becomes hard to remain enthusiastic for sequels of the same old games, or even new IP with standard mechanics. I can honestly says that the only thing that REALLY excites me is PlayStation VR. Virtual reality will finally provide that sense of newness missing for so long. It's also the fact that we have less time as adults. As a 32 year old married man with a full time job I know I can play maybe 60-90 minutes a night if I'm lucky. Those with kids are in a much worse situation. I often feel that, as soon as I start a game, I'm clock watching as I know I have to get off at a certain time. It's a real immersion breaker. The thing you mentioned about money is the exact opposite for me. Games are cheaper now and I have more of my own money. I may feel that way as I don't buy dlc (or very rarely, I might make an exception for games like witcher3) Oh, and there are lots of Indy games if you want the 8/16 bit days back. Or just buy an old console, I have a NES set up alongside my current gen.

Agreed, so many shit games out and more on their way.. StarCitizen looks promising but I doubt that will ever be released anytime soon. As for F4 no one can really tell what they have in store, from the trailers it does look very linier and scripted. Arma 2/3 are really good games for PC, if you ever think of getting into PC gaming.

    • Sounds like you need a gaming pc; where games are 30-80% cheaper, there is a wider variety of games, and have an overall more enjoyable experience.

      • Pro-tip: avoid the big AAA titles for a while. If you want to relive some of the fun gaming used to have, stick to those small games on the store. The ones that are no more than $20. You will find that not only are these games simple and fun, but they also provide a ton of simple entertainment for a much better price. You will also find quite a few gems in the mix that are amazing (good examples being child of light, castle crashers and dungeon defenders). The biggest titles have been setting expectations higher and higher without really delivering all that much. And of course because devs are putting more and more into what fans want of the games (graphics, fluid movement, high fps) the costs of making games has only rose higher. The market refuses to allow an increase in price of games, so the only way companies can really afford to keep making games flashier is with extra money from DLC or microtransactions. It's going to hit a wall eventually and both the fans and the devs will lose. With smaller, simpler games, there is less focus on the flashy and more focus on the actual content there. No big DLC plans or crippling microtransaxtions. Just simple art, great stories and gameplay, and a he'll of a lot of fun.

        • Sounds like you're just losing interest in video games as a whole as you get older
