There is no "war on religious freedom"

Freedom of religion means you’re allowed to practice whatever religion (or lack of religion) you choose without fear of legal persecution. It does not mean you can discriminate against people based on what your religion claims is right or wrong, it does not mean you can prevent people from obtaining things they are legally entitled to (like marriage licenses) because of what your religion claims is right or wrong, it does not mean you can refuse to do your government job that you signed up for because it violates your religious beliefs, it does not mean your religion overrules or protects you from the law. Furthermore, religion has no place in politics. Every president we’ve ever had has been Christian, the majority of Congress and state government are Christian, and they get away with publicly spewing their faith because America is dominated by Christians, but America is not a Christian nation. As far as I’m concerned a candidate for public office should be disqualified the moment they say something along the lines of “I’m doing this because god told me to.” Politicians are entitled to practice a religion just like everyone else, but their religion has no place in politics and has no place influencing public policy. Separation of church and state. Separation of church and state. Separation of church and state. Separation of church and state. Separation of church and state. Separation of church and state. Separation of church and state. Separation of church and state.

  • I think as a business owner if you want to refuse service to someone based on religious beliefs you should be able to. If you want to turn down someone's money and deal with the negative publicity based on your personal religious beliefs that's on you. In general I despise whenever I hear a politician be for or against a law because of their beliefs.

      • Im -blam!-ing fed up with this. 8/10 threads in #offtopic are about -blam!-ing religion. -blam!- IT! I don't give a shit about god or jesus or mohammed or any of that bullshit. I have had better discussions with a -blam!-ing trash can. Its lame, idiotic, and all the -blam!-ing evangelists are going insane talking about it. NO -blam!-S GIVEN! What's that? Atheists are assholes? Nobody gives a shit what you think! This is why people are at war! They won't shut the -blam!- up about how their religion is better! Just -blam!-ing STOP! All the people who -blam!- about religion just shit all over the place. Its disgusting. If you support, sign and bump this thread. To help stop the religious infection, copy and paste this message on a religious thread. Thanks. https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/167228469/0/0

                • It's ridiculous to consider disqualifying an individual from office because they are guided by their faith. That's simply saying they shouldn't hold office because you don't like how they think. That coin could easily be flipped the other way. Yes, church and state should be separate. Separating individuals from their faith to hold office should not.

Separation of church and state means not publicly endorsing religion at all. It means there is not state sponsored "official religion". It means a religion doesn't get a say in how the country is run. Religious people and their beliefs however can. Because, after all, this is a democracy. And that means the people get the say, and if the majority of the people are Christian, then guess what. Christian-leaning rulings and laws. But people need to stop whining because some kid prayed on a football field or because a teacher said "God bless America". That isn't the school commanding someone pray or say "God". It's the personal decision of that person, and they have every right. Just because someone who is hired by the government does something religious or has a religious event, does not mean that it is state sanctioned or sponsored. It's just a lame excuse to try to push an agenda.

                          • I like this post. Just one factor though. The marriage licenses. If there is freedom of religion, then a Christian should not have to submit to the same belief of a gay couple. That defeats the purpose. Now, the solution is to not to force a Christian to do something that is against his or her belief. I mean think about it, an atheist shouldn't be forced to pray. So why should a Christian be forced? It's hypocrisy. Either not allow a Christian to issue marriage licenses, or have the gay couple go elsewhere. Now this is MY opinion, so if you hate me for what I say, that's your deal. Now, I don't hate gays. I have a lesbian friend for crying out loud. Is she a cool person? Def yes. Do I agree with her? No. Should I force anything onto her? Def no. I should at least offer and show her Christianity, but it's her CHOICE after that. And I shouldn't interfere, whether I agree or not
