Question for devs: why were so many Year 1 weapons nerfed, only to be left behind in Year 2?

I would appreciate some insight from Bungie on this, because nerfing gear that's already being outmoded just doesn't make sense. Yes, they'll still be more or less viable in PvP, but I'm sure most players would agree that, at its core, Destiny is a PvE-driven game. With that in mind, 2.0 seems to be aggressively beating a dead horse, and I'm curious as to why that is. When the 2.0 balance notes were released, I was actually really happy. Yes, some of our favorite OP weapons were getting nudged back to reality (maybe some a little too much), but, overall, it seemed like a much-needed revamp of the current Meta. However; I was only on board with the nerfs because I assumed that it was preparing Year 1 gear to mesh with Year 2 gear on the same level. Now that it's come to light that ALL Year 1 gear is being left behind at current levels, I'm confused at why so many weapons were nerfed to begin with! The only way I can see the balancing making sense is if Bungie is, in fact, planning to allow Year 1 gear to be upgraded to Year 2 levels; if not in TTK, then in a future update. Either way, I think I can safely speak for the rest of the community in saying that Bungie needs to publicly address this issue directly, and stop beating around the bush with vague statements and misdirections. :P

    • To start this comment I would like to say I LOVE destiny as it is right now, and #saveourexotics. Second DeeJ said this, Bungie Weekly Update - 12/04/2014 by DeeJ “The last thing we wanted was for you to look at your favorite gun or helmet and decide that it had become obsolete. Since the reveal, we’ve read a lot of ideas for how this could have been done better. Your feedback is clear: The time you have invested in your stuff should be respected.” Now it seems he has lied and it is clear that Gjallahorn, Vex Mithoclast, Hard Light, and some more are not making it to the TTK. It makes the buffs and nerfs for these seem useless. I will admit some new content looks great but leaving our favorite gear in the dust makes me not want to download TTK. Over all with Black Ops 3 and other good looking games coming out I might abandon it even after following this game for so long. If they were to come out and say why they have done this and explain to us if we will ever see our favorite guns useful again it would be better, but as of right now they are screwing us without admitting it. I completely agree with BoomerSooner51's idea on how Bungie comes up with ideas. I have started a clan called THE TURTLE KING and i want to fight back against Bungie and their stupid ideas

    • I believe they released an article on this in "edge" magazine, we're getting our exotics just a little bit later, don't worry you'll get them, just not now.

        • waits for their response, "Oh you can still use them. you just have to infuse them." then we see that it would take burning 8675309 other weapons to raise them to max year two stats.

Okay, I think I've figured it out. Bungie scours these forums for ideas for this game. They then immediately toss out the most popular or reasonable ideas. They then take the shitty ideas from the forums as well as their own "brilliant ideas" (they're really proud of these) and tape the ideas to the wall. Then, and this is the best part, they bring in a drunk monkey who starts shitting on the floor and then throwing the shit at the walls with the ideas. Whatever idea is hit by shit is the idea that Bungie chooses to implement. You're welcome for cracking the case.

            • My take on it was that they realised that the new strikes and raid were still too easy even with a maxed nerfed gally when they tested them so then the only solution was to leave them at year 1 levels. I imagine the 2 bosses in the twitch strike they revealed today would have gone down in seconds with 3 maxed gallys.

              • Future update for sure. It will be the selling point for the last DLC before Destiny 2. And then who cares if gjallahorn 2.0 tier two breaks the game because Destiny 2 will only be weeks away. (Next year).

Or maybe they just feel that the weapons that they do nerf will still be too powerful and compete with the Year 2 exotics. They don't exactly want people blasting rough the new raid in less than 30 minutes by using Gjallarhorn. That sort of defeats the point of the challenge and you can see that already with the Vault and Crota. Just think about it. It isn't that difficult to understand why they are abandoning certain weapons. Edit: Also, not all year one gear is being left behind. Most exotics are being brought up to year 2 levels, like the SUROS and Light Beyond Nemesis.

                • Because, by the looks of it year 1 wrapons would still perform better then year 2 gear even after the nerf. It's sucks but I guess only 3 more weeks and we'll have hands on the new stuff and can decide if ttk is the last bungie product I buy.

                    • its to give us a sense of them doing right only to slap us in the face with a cold fish. I seriously am starting to think they get off on hyping us up only to completely destroy our expectations in the worst possible manner...... HOWEVER i will admit other aspects of TTK seem solid. The new questing system, gunsmith rep, fraction allegiance, cryptarch selling LEGENDARIES, among the few i can name off the top of my head. but even all these good things are over shadowed but the HUGE frickin mistake they are making. First off they unintentionally admit that the main story of Destiny from year one is complete crap by giving EVERY player a free pass to level 25. yes even the ones who have NEVER played before only have to complete the first mission then bypass everything else to get to TTK. Second they are nearly doubling attack value of weapons and armor right off the bat in year two so on top of the nerf and balancing for year one weapons they will INSTANTLY pale in comparision to common weapons found in year two. this is a double fish face slap for me it cant make up for all the good things coming in year two.

Let's see what Bungie had to say about that last year after players hated it:
Bungie Weekly Update - 12/04/2014 by DeeJ “The last thing we wanted was for you to look at your favorite gun or helmet and decide that it had become obsolete. • The answer is simple: If they nerfed our favorite weapons it SHOULD then cause us to be less pissed off when those same guns aren't available in 2.0. Think about it. Why else nerf the exotics they did? Why nerf Ice Breaker? Gjallarhorn? Because, it was their way of making our transition "easier" when those weapons won't be available in a 2.0 model. This was a strategic move on their part. It was a preemptive strike against exotics they KNEW weren't going to be available for upgrade in TTK. Then, as if to poke the tiger a little more, they have Xur sell Gjallarhorn just to troll us one more time. I'd applaud their commitment if they weren't such arrogant, douche filled nerds with an over-inflated sense of self worth.

                              • Because they want year one to disappear. They want to marginalize everything connected to year one, and justify the year two weapons.

I get that they want us to try new weapons and move on to these but why not give us our raid legendaries through some end game content. I wrote a post suggesting a possible mechanic for this. Opinions and thoughts welcomed. https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/148518063/0/0/1/Post/148518063

But Then again try using the first gun u get compaired to a legendary 365 auto rifle. Dunno. Whatever it is no amount of complaint is gonna fix it. It's bungievisions game and they will do what they want with it.
