Trials of Osiris Frustrations

Maybe some of you guys killing it in Trials can weigh in here with some advice or pointers or suggestions. Simply put, I am STRUGGLING with Trials of Osiris. In turn, that's affecting my experience in House of Wolves overall. I've never played a game in which endgame success felt out of reach for me until now. I've played every major PVP based game since Halo 2 and that includes miscellaneous ones like WoW or SC ranked / arena /ladders. I've never been that guy who is always at the top, but I've always been a solid team player/communicator/support guy. Some games at the top but mostly in the middle. Of course a bad game on occasion. Now with Destiny I've mostly focused on raiding as I do with most mixed RPG type games but still dabble in banner or crucible with buddies. I've spent many hours figuring out VOG and CE before messing with provolone and cheddar, and patiently taught players encounters over many hours on many days over many months. The way I see it you improve your overall player pool that way so more people know how to succeed, then over time most players you randomly group with know basics and encounters and everyone wins. For the most part people are willing to stick around and learn, get the hang of things and mesh with teams. This is where my struggle with Trials comes in. The pool of players is much smaller, the patience level of those who have a propensity for success (seems to be) nearly nonexistent. It's frustrating to see Lighthouse Guardians quit on teams they just formed over 1 loss or 1 bad Passage. Especially for someone who spent so much time teaching other Guardians, from my perspective it can take time for a team to mesh together properly. It's also very limiting. I've had an extremely hard time finding groups that will stick together and then on top of that, won't go AFK or have to leave due to parent or wife and such things. And because the Fireteams are so much smaller, the chance of finding that one person or two you can Friend for later goes drastically down as well. You also can't do any meaningful practice games and hope to meet people that are there looking to improve and are less pressured to win and thus more patient... Because elimination ran all of what, 4 days one time? So anytime you have an opportunity to play Trials it's do or die, and it feels like everyone approaches it has an urgency to constantly win or declare any Passage that doesn't result in a Lighthouse trip as a failure and waste of time. Maybe I'm the minority here but I have yet to see a piece of Exile gear/ 5 wins. I've spent entire days off in ToO (between matches, orbit time, new passage time and forum hunting) and have NOTHING to show for it. Now it's in my head and anytime I'm in a Trials match, I'm playing outside of my comfort zone and end up overthinking things and making mistakes. It's almost stressful to worry about being labeled as a weak link on a team and have people move on to someone else over a bad round or two (and those of you that do this know who you are). When your teams don't stick together success seems unattainable. This isn't a static endgame raid encounter, this time the enemy is different every time... Drastically. The only thing you CAN learn and adapt to is your team, so in a way THAT is the true test (at least to me). And I get it, I know people don't want to waste their time and who knows how many bad matches people have dealt with... But I feel like overall my performance isn't too much different than most others, yet I get the brunt of the blame because I'm usually getting picked up by a pair of buddies and I'm the odd man out. I guess my question is, am I just unlucky to run across this many impatient or AFK or early quitters that's I can't break past the Silver Tier category? Is there something I should be doing differently when it comes to finding players or some advice or tips someone can give that I'm maybe missing about ToO gameplay? It seems simple enough: high intellect build, stuck with team, Max weapons launcher, be 34, communicate, Rez your teammates, push when the enemy starts dying, use choke points and grenades. I farmed Etheric Light and maxed my thorn, high impact shotty and launcher with a phat PVP roll. Am I missing something? And yet... Every week that goes by I feel left behind more and more as players are looking for Lighthouse Guardians only and shaking down profiles to see that they own the Emblem or card for it. Like they came out of the gate themselves with a Lighthouse pass or something. I'm dying for a taste of endgame success and it feels more and more like a job to get there, causing me to play less. I already have a job you know? And finding a team who knows how to succeed and is willing to bring a third in to adjust, seems like an impossible task. I can't possibly be the only one. If anyone sees this who wants to lend a hand, GT is Veilsix on Xbox One. Otherwise, your advice would be appreciated. I know this will get flamed of course but that's life, and to those who lend a hand I appreciate it. To be clear, I'm looking to put in the work, not asking for hand me downs or carries. I think the top tier gear should always be earned through proper effort, and enjoyed by the people willing to put in the time. This isn't a "change the way it works" post, except that I'd like to see a practice mode built in. TLDR: how do you succeed as a single player in TOO when Fireteams constantly quit and you can't break silver tier? Where can I find solid teams willing to onboard a third support type player? Am I alone in the universe? Help me obi-wan, you're my only hope. EDIT:::: just want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has stopped by to either relate and empathize, to offer advice and tips, and to extend a hand in friendship & help. I expected to get flamed and such but everyone has been supportive and really cool about this. You guys really have shown we have a great community in this game, and I appreciate you all. As an update, I almost went flawless already! One loss short of it, and it was due to my bungling a boon. Like I told the guys I was with (one of whom reached out to me after reading this post): I'm actually glad it didn't happen because I learned so much from them that I didn't feel I could go around flashing flawless emblems and not live up to it. They did a fair share of carrying me and that's not how I want it to go down ( though I did really well in some games and saved some rounds so I was pleased), I want to earn it!

    • I'd like to help you but I'm on 360 so I'll impart a tip or two (some of which is my opinion however I would say I'm ok at trials with an 84% win ratio over 200+ games). For ease: Use your warlock with firebolt grenades, touch of flame and viking funeral and self res. Possibly the most OP setup for trials. Otherwise thorn + arcbolt grenades is sickening. Have a sniper in your team, even if his job is to camp orbs from a distance he doesn't need to be a sniping god. Max out your armour and recovery stat, you don't really need agility unless you whole team has a setup that lends itself to it and in all honesty you'd be talking an upper tier team. Do not engage in a counter snipe fight if you are not set up first. If you move into a spot already covered by a sniper expect to die. The only way you're going to survive is if the sniper is garbage and relying on the other team to be garbage is a tactic that will lose you the game. People WILL be using thorn, come to terms with that and move on. When you check another players loadout, focus on what weapon types he's using, can his sniper rifle 1 shot from a revive (very important when considering a revive is worth it), what grenades are he using, what super perks does he have on his super, how much int/disc do they have. These things should factor into your decision on where to go and where to fight. Don't let the other team decide where the fight is. If they are in a good position, draw them out of it. Don't be afraid to wait out a round if you have a good spot to defend the control point. If you are going to rush, do it from diffrent directions. All it takes is 1 grenade and all 3 of you are at deaths door if you're standing next to each other. Don't be afraid to run away from a fight and regen. Just make sure you're far enough away that you can't get finished by a grenade. Don't stray from the safety of the teamshot. The whole idea is to separate each player from each other, don't do it for them. Shoot them in the head - pretty important. Hope this helps

      • I think the problem honestly is within the matchmaking for Trials. There should be some skill in match making and there is not. It's solely connection based (which makes no sense since there are so many cheaters). This causes people trying to get through trials for the first time to play against a team of stacked, sweaty, pathetic pub tryhards who have ran through trials 10 times already in one day.

Ya in my experience of trying an lfg thing when my friends weren't on was a terrible time. It took me a number of weeks to get flawless but the way to do it is finding a clan/group of friends or people that can be loyal to each other. I have maybe 8-10 friends that I usually do content with during the week. It took some time to find the right combination of friends to run with and try not to make my other friends not feel bad at the same time. I finally hit a good combo with one of my best friends and a guy who's in our clan who I've known for a long time. We all talked a lot but stayed relaxed and had similar roles the entire time. Having our own play styles pre determined and having a sense of each of our jobs before the game even started was key to making us go flawless multiple times. My trials K/D along with my crucible K/D is nothing to look at, but when me and my 2 friends run it we all usually go positive and share an even amount of killing. Our strategy to start is I flank with the shotgun and last word if the map isn't too large since I'm the weakest with a sniper out of us 3. My best friend switches between shotgun or sniper since he is great with both and it depends on the competition. And our last friend snipes always. I know it's definitely easier said then done but trying to find loyal people you can make friends with will make things 300% easier for all of you. You sound like you have a sense of what works in PvP and what doesn't and that is also important for the people you try and team up with. I like your honesty and wanting to earn your rewards. I am unfortunately still on 360 till at least October so I can't offer much help past advice. I wish you the best of luck in finding people you can trust and going flawless on your own terms dominating the field. It will be hard and you might have a hard time still even if you find a group that trusts you and you trust back. You will get there though and it will be an awesome time when you get there. P.S. The scholar is my new favorite weapon and if you ever get if from brother Vance or from the chest KEEP IT AND USE IT!! I can't put it down and it wrecks! Edit: I SEE YOU DID IT!! GREAT JOB! IT FEELS AWESOME DOESNT IT! You can still take what I said if you need advice, or I can help give you different advice! Again awesome job and I hope you found a good stable group so you can experience the endgame more

            • Wow this is an essay! I might finish reading later but all I have to say so far is I don't play with many people that quit after 1 loss or failed passage unless they need to leave or the team just wasn't clicking at all. I always have a hard time cranking out the 9 games in one sitting. I wish trials matches were first to 3 instead of 5 so it would be more manageable. I think it'd stop people from quitting hoping to find a dream team instantly so they don't waste their time figuring out a team dynamic

            • I feel the same man. Me and another friend have tried to make it but can't. It's discouraging when you're close and fall short plus playing with a new guy every week isn't ideal. Yet I come back every weekend trying again. But it's getting so depressing getting wrecked every week I'm probably going to give up soon :(

                • Glad to see I'm in the same boat. I think I do pretty decent in regular pvp but when it gets to trials I get my butt handed to me it's like a different game or something almost every player that I face seems like "that guy" that can out dual me every time. I really like the idea of the game but it seems like there needs to be some kind of match making with less skilled players to get practice cause when it's show time and you don't play well your team will let you know about it. I really would like to play and have fun but have not found a group to do this yet.

                • I made a thread a couple weeks back about issues w/ToO, too. I pointed out that Bungie had likely inadvertently made an in-game culture where anything less than a flawless passage was deemed a "failure". My solution was a different usage for passage coins, and not surprisingly plenty of people cried "but that'll make flawless so easy!"...hence proving my point. My experience has so far told me that I'm not skilled enough to compete in ToO. Etheric Light is the engame currency and I feel Bungie made some errors in how it is given out. Locked behind a skill wall in ToO. Locked behind a grind wall in IB. A rare RNG drop from Nighfall. That leaves PoE, which is a boring, disappointing game mode. NONE of these have match making. There are no avenues to trade in or acquire any other way to get your gear to max level other than these tasks. I hope that I can find more reason to play Destiny than what I've gotten out of my hundreds of hours so far. Right now, I'm likely to go find something else to play.

Great post. Veilsix, I'm on Xbox One as well and I've been replying to a lot of those "Need help in Trials of Osiris" posts lately because it seems that a lot of people are having this problem and are in the same boat as you. I've been Flawless 30 times total now (I keep a tally on my phone) and I would love to help you out with Trials and give you a few tips here and there that have been working for me. The only downside is that I'm currently taking a one-month break from Destiny and I'll be back online on August 6. If you still want to game then, just send me a message on Xbox One (GT is KKorrupt) and I'll gladly add you as a friend and we can game. If a month is too long, then by all means, find a fireteam that works for you and keep grinding it out. That may take a while because a lot of people as you've mentioned are very selfish when it comes to competition; they only care about their own success in the playlist and are willing to do anything (leave teammates, quit midgame and find another fireteam, etc) in order to possibly make the Lighthouse. I'm definitely not like that, and a lot of the people on my friend's list aren't like that either; they're willing to help anyone out, newcomer or veteran through the many endgame missions and challenges in Destiny. Here are a few tips I'd like to give you in case you choose not to add me and message me on Xbox (I totally understand, a month is a long period of time): 1) Find Friends This is often the hardest step because as you've said in your post and I've said above, a lot of people are selfish, especially when it comes to competition. Just keep playing with different people (perhaps some people who reply to this post) and try things out. In my experience, I've found that the gamers on Destiny who are 18+ are a lot more mature and willing to help out than those that are younger. Try to find a few cool people to play with that are also either willing to help out if they're experienced, or at least willing to stick as a team in the face of failure. It's important to find a few friends that are online regularly and have the same mentality and goals as you in the game. It's hard but definitely not impossible. 2) Play Trials of Osiris Now I know a lot of people suggest to practice for Trials of Osiris in Skirmish, but I don't completely agree with that. Here's why: Skirmish is a 3v3 gametype sure, but it plays completely differently than Trials because respawning is possible; it has less emphasis on setting up over orbs than Trials. During the weekdays, I would play Crucible often just to keep your aim nice, steady and consistent. It's important that when Trials weekend begins that you're not still struggling to follow opponents around with your crosshair. In other words, your shot has to be ready come Trials weekend. Once Trials weekend begins, play Trials of Osiris. But don't put any sort of pressure on yourself to win, to maintain a certain K/D, to impress your teammates by being on top of the scoreboard etc. Just simply practice. Note: You will need to have found friends that won't quit and are just as dedicated as you to complete this step. 3) Practice Trials of Osiris Like I said above, don't play the game thinking you'll go Flawless in the first passage card. Certainly do not play Trials pressuring yourself to not make any mistakes because you think you'll disappoint your teammates and lose the game. That's the wrong mentality. Just practice. This is important because this is the only way for you and your teammates to learn how to play better. More importantly, this is a chance for you to develop a strategy that works for your team. By doing this, you get to know yourself better as a player and you start to understand what your teammates are doing and why they're doing things that way. This gives you the opportunity to help them out more because now you know their playstyle. The point of practicing in Trials of Osiris is that it builds teamwork. Now don't get me wrong, this part is certainly not easy and you need a fireteam who's got the same mentality as you going into it (otherwise they'll quit). You guys will lose a lot. Tons of times. But that's okay. Everyone loses, and it's the only way you'll get better. Embrace your losses and learn from them. 4) Go Flawless In my opinion, after going through the previous steps, this step is one of the easier ones. This is because you've already found a solid group to play with who won't quit on you. You've also developed chemistry with your fireteam which is crucial. Now, just do a serious run. Tell your whole fireteam to clear their passages, grab a new one and go for it. If you have the passage coins, buy the free first win. Buy Mercy when you're anywhere from 3 to 5 wins without losses and buy the 2 for 1 at 7 wins. That'll help you conserve those passage coins. What does a serious run mean? It means turning up the volume just a little bit on your headset so you can hear everything that's going on around you. It means calling out to your teammates. Call out what builds your opponents are using before the match. Discuss with your team before each round what the game plan is and where everyone is going. It's important to be organized. Call out where the enemy team is, where they're pushing and how many are pushing. Call out what weapons they're using. My point is you have to be vocal. Communication is huge in Trials of Osiris. Now I won't go into too much more detail about tips and strategies to use in Trials of Osiris because you can find a lot of Trials guides in the forums and some are pretty good. Just know that Trials of Osiris plays differently for each team; there isn't one single way of guaranteeing you success. Do something that works for your team. Best of luck guardian.

                      • I'm in the same boat buddy. Had a cool guy help me a couple of times and got to 7-0 then couldn't get passed that. Bullshit part was last week we got to 7-0 then lost one but had a mercy. Then next match we're up 2-0 and my fiance had a major panic attack and I had to get off and take her to the hospital. When I get back on I see a message from him saying I better have a good excuse and he defriended me. I tell him what happened and his reply was "..." so yeah cussed him out. People have no patience or understanding at all. My brother was the other guy in our fireteam and said the guy just lost it.. It's just sad how people behave these days

                      • Honestly, a few pieces of gear are okay, but other than that it's more frustrating than anything. The good thing is that between the raids, iron banner, and even some vendors, you can easily find a few sets of armor for your characters with amazing stats without having to do trials.

                      • I'd be happy to run some cards with you. I've been flawless on every character most weeks and feel competent enough to hold my own. Feel free to check out my stats, they are not the best but I know how to win. In terms of trials its important to understand what your weak points are and either find someone to fill that gap or become extremely good at not allowing a team to exploit that weakness. For example you say you have a max shotty but make no mention of a sniper rifle, if snipers are not your forte either practise during the week days until you feel comfortable or become the dedicated rusher on your team, responsible for closing the other team down when one of them drops and be the one who leads a successful assault. Once you have decided what your role is it becomes easier to find others to complement your style, either finding one or two snipers or running all shotguns and developing a really aggressive style. Don't be afraid to consider people who can both shotgun and snipe effectively either as the can be a real asset in throwing off teams who themselves have solid tactics. I've tried to keep this as general as possible but there is a lot more that can be said and many more tactics that can be run. My GT is the same as my username here, feel free to add me although no pressure either way. Good luck guardian.

My on big complaint is they made the PvE end game gear absolute garbage. Whoever came up with the PoE gear was definitely not in their right minds...

                        • same boat. I have all the gear and would of went 9-2 if my mercy would of worked properly. In pvp I am usually top three if not the #1 guy 95% of the time. My k/d, as the 9-0 nerds would say sucks.. But I get after it when I play. I don't camp and run away. Most 9-0 players if not all of them never really won 9 games straight. There was a glitch the first week were people only had to win 4 games to get 9-0. You'll know these 9-0 people in the iron banner.. They are usually the bottom players on your team. I am trying to grind out trials, but always get with people that quit after one card is filled. So I usually only have 4-10 games per week. Which is annoying as hell cause I would like to get better at it. I usually get 7-14 kills in trials.. Yet I feel I suck and need to be like every other dickhead that uses a thorn or last round sniper.. Trails would be a lot more fun if this shit wasn't in it or you had to solely rely on it. Not to ramble on, but if ya need someone to play with hit me up. I am usually playing with raid buddies or doing team crucible.. Send me a msg, I'd be happy to join.. I don't care about 9-0 and wont bitch and moan cause we lost a round.

                              • 1.8 kd overall across all toons 1.8 control 1.9 clash 1.5 too kd Never been to the lighthouse. Really don't care either. None of the primaries appeal to me outside the handcannon. Also both times I played with a flawless player. They were at the bottom. Every game.

                              • I feel some of your frustrations man. Haven't been to the lighthouse, just about got the armour most weeks. The biggest problem when finding a 3rd player for trials, if I'm with a buddy, is the poisonous attitude some people have. 'Must have gone flawless every week, I will be checking your profile' so on and so forth. Most of the time these guys aren't even that skilled, they may have been carried themselves. I dropped the compulsion to go flawless a few weeks ago. The rewards simply aren't worth stressing yourself over. As such I play with some friends, and concentrate on having a good time. It's not to say you don't get frustrated from time to time. But my attitude shift increased my enjoyment a lot. I'm a middle of the pack player straight up. Do not claim to be very skilled, but I'm learning. Some of my friends are much better than me but are understanding. Not to say I don't top the table at times. But working as a team with some friends is so much more fun than being in with some obnoxious 15 year olds that drop out if you have one bad game.
