Three Reasons Upgrading Weapons in TTK Is Good and Bad

Weapons Should Not be Upgraded/Ascended for TTK

I've been looking on the forums recently and saw that this topic of whether or not you will be able to upgrade old weapons to be competitive in TTK was very popular, although I don't believe that anything on the matter was confirmed by Bungie, correct me if I'm wrong. This got me thinking- what are some reasons for each side of the argument? I managed to come up with these, and I believe that people on their side of the argument would agree with my reasons of why upgrading or ascending weapons from the past to be relevant in TTK is good or bad. Just a warning- be ready for some reading. Good: 1. Many of the weapons from the base game were among the best in their class, such as Fatebringer, Vision of Confluence, etc. While many people would use this as a reason for them to be dropped, I see it as a way to make Destiny more diverse in player decisions. To make the increasing diversity happen, Bungie would have to add in weapons that are just as good as weapons from the past. For example, take Fatebringer. It is one of the top tier hand cannons due to the fact that it can take out large waves of enemies with Firefly and Outlaw. Its Arc elemental damage only helps it. If this could be brought back, Bungie would have to add in another hand cannon that has a different purpose. For example, add in a solar hand cannon with high impact, low rate of fire with amazing range and decent stability and reload speed. Give it the bonuses of Crowd Control and Return to Sender, which would make it good for taking out the more difficult enemies that players might encounter. This would create competition between Fatebringer and the mystery solar hand cannon, thus making the loadouts of players more diverse. 2. Xbox users, such as myself, have been anxiously awaiting the day that we are able to use Hawkmoon, Monte Carlo and 4th Horseman, and the ability to enter the Dust Palace (Just me? Okay.) If Bungie decided to make the exotics outdated and powerless in the endgame of TTK, this would very much anger the Xbox community. Even though they aren't as large as the PS community, they still make up a significant portion of Destiny's player base. This would most likely result in Xbox players being discouraged from playing Destiny's future expansions, thus resulting in a significant loss in income for Bungie. Bringing some numbers into this, Destiny made $325 in the first five days. Say the Xbox community made up 2/5 of the overall player base. If no Xbox players bought Destiny, Bungie would have lost $130 in total sales. This would mean that Bungie would lose a significant portion of income over the ten years that they plan to keep Destiny alive for if the Xbox players boycotted. 3. Many players have put countless hours into this game, and it would be ridiculous to throw them away. I personally would be very disappointed if my 1,000+ hours in game only netted me an overcrowded vault full of useless weapons and armor and an exclusive shader, emblem and sparrow. Players have done many things that were (And still continue to be) time consuming and difficult. Having an entire weekend of just fighting Skolas that netted you an elemental pulse rifle took many hours, time that you could have been doing other things, such as taking care of a family, mowing the lawn or hanging out with friends. Little did you know, though, that the pulse rifle is just going to be under powered in the endgame content that is coming out in the next couple of months, which would be pretty infuriating to learn of. Destiny is kind of like an investment. People like to see their investments pay off, and rendering the weapons of the past useless would not be the kind of payoff people expected. Bad: 1. Some of the weapons from the past are way too over powered and will not be substituted for any other weapon, period. This is very much true; I wouldn't mind seeing the Gjallarhorns die out in PvE, and Thorn in competitive PvP is kind of ridiculous. This way, Destiny can follow the common theme of "Out with the old, in with the new," as Bungie would just give us many more weapons that offer a new variety in the game. Also, some of the weapons just have too good of a roll, meaning that no weapon ever could possibly replace it. Take Fatebringer, for example. After the HoW, just about everyone uses the Fatebringer in PvE due to its insanely good perk roll, and it's kind of crazy how much usage it gets. If it can be upgraded further, many people believe that everyone that has one will continue to use it, killing off any diversity to the game, at least in terms of PvE weaponry, as the only loadouts that I see in PvE are Fatebringer, shotgun and Gjallarhorn. 2. If the players were able to upgrade the weapons up to par, then there would be no effort on the part of the player to obtain weapons designed for endgame content. I know that I am kind of stockpiling Etheric Light, which would allow me to have many competitive weapons when TTK launches. This requires past content to be done, thus eliminating that hunt for the best and newest weapons that are in the raid and other content that is very fun to do. While players could still do that, it would be a lot less time consuming, allowing the players that haven't touched the game since July or so that has an Etheric Light stockpile be just as competitive (If not more competitive) as someone that has been grinding out the game since HoW launched and has used all their Etheric Light. This would kind of replicate the Dark Below problem, with all the time being spent in the Vault of Glass giving you armor that was less desirable than vendor gear when they were both maxed out, something that shouldn't ever be repeated, and wouldn't if you had to start from the ground up. 3. Easier content shouldn't reward items that can be on par with those that are obtained from harder, more challenging content. That is kind of like giving a bartender the same amount of pay that the manager gets. It makes no logical sense. Why should a person who is doing a raid at level 30 be able to get gear that makes him equal to the person who does the new raid at level 36 ?(Just an example, I know it will be higher than that.) A very common concept is that greater difficulty means greater rewards, yet upgrading weapons to match the ones from the hardest content in the game completely nullifies that principle. While, yes, it takes at least two activities to gain the necessary materials, (One for the gear and one for the upgrading material) it will still take about the same time, if not less, to complete the two easier activities than the one challenging one. If you made here, you are one focused person. Let me know if you agree or disagree with my reasons as to why it is good and bad, or if you have any other reasons of your own. Just a note- I don't believe that there was any official confirmation of any of this information by Bungie (If I'm wrong, let me know,) so don't take this as anything official. • I would love if we can upgrade the ild weapons but make the new weapons to be just as good as the old stuff so we have to choose.

  • I love the VoG weapons. They're all amazing. However, I do not want to use the same weapons for every activity for years. I want to abandon those old weapons by necessity in order to discover new weapons to love.

  • I love the old weapons, I think they were all fun to use. I've also been playing since launch so I've had good runs with all the weapons and armors. From that standpoint, I'd personally like seeing them phased out ( increase vault space so we don't have to get rid of them though). They have all been fun to use but just like this year, I'd love to start a new year of adventures with new weapons. I could see relatively new players being frustrated by it though, especially since they havn't had the same quality time with them as long time players have.
