Why are you STILL an Atheist?

In this day and age, how are you this naive? You think that this world was made naturally?? Your telling me that all this... Humans, plants, DNA, our brains (which have more nerve connections than there are stars in the sky)... All just "developed" over time? I mean get a grip people. You need to see the light. If your a pessimist douché then leave now. But I spoke to the lord last night. He came to me in a dream. He said to me "thou shalt be my speaker, and thou shalt spreadeth the light of wisdom upon the darkest of souls."Are you still reading this Gr8 B8? Now I can only assume he meant atheists, the darkest of souls. This also goes for polytheists. Seriously? Multiple gods? I mean it's just a mockery of the lord, who presides over everything, who is responsible for SAVING YOUR SOUL!! You're STILL here?? Why go out of your way to make fun of the hand that guides your life, and who loves you unconditionally?? Seriously, atheists and anti-christs and polytheists... Go to church. TICKLE MY PICKLE!!!! Get an education on how real life works. I'll see you on Sunday!

  • Too many religious people that are hateful, the bloody origins of religion, and the fact that most Christians refuse to accept the fact that Christianity has bits and pieces of the paganism religion(if you can call it one). I am who I am, and my family and friends still love me even though our beliefs may be different.

While this is clearly trolling, I think that it has the potential to make for an interesting discussion between the religious and the atheistic. I remember when my secular-minded peers used to ask me why I'm religious, and I'd often respond it's because while every fiber of my mind tells me to be an atheist, every fiber of my heart tells me to be religious. Is it weakness and fear? Maybe. But even if I shun the heart and adhere solely to the mind, I can't shake the hypocrisy of faith. Just as religions are the products of their times, so is atheism and the overall ideals of the Enlightenment. Unfortunately I know this all too well as an English major, and it can be depressing as it makes you skeptical of virtually all knowledge. You can't help but see everything as the inevitable product of its times. And just as the religious are arrogant enough to have faith that their religion is correct--that somehow all of the historical, literary, cultural, and other factors that led to the development of their religion happened to produce a *true* religion--you start to feel the same way about knowledge itself, even atheism and reason itself. We rely on the axiomatic principles that the universe is fathomable by the human mind, that what we perceive via the five senses is in fact reality and not just an optical illusion (filmmakers are the masters of this. With the proper camera angling, a diorama the size of a shoe box can resemble a full-sized city), and that the laws of logic which underlie all quests for knowledge are actually true and always will be. That said, I have trouble identifying with any worldview. I consider myself religious as Eastern Orthodox simply because I think it's much more logical than Western Christianity and my heart tells me to go for it. But I find myself very sympathetic toward atheism, to the extent that I would defend it religiously (pun not intended) against the Western Christianity which gave birth to it. Overall, I don't think I can ever adhere to any position with total certainty, be it religion or atheism. I think when it all comes down to it, everything is just a product of its times, built upon unsubstantiated axioms, and can be seen as the inevitable product of history. Even my own pessimistic viewpoint, as painful as it is to admit. I'm probably just as much a product of my times as the staunchly religious and fiercely atheistic. I imagine that the English majors of the future will look back and see how my times, history, and culture shaped and produced the views I hold today.

    • If you talk to God you're religious, if God talks to you then you're mentally unstable.

    • Funny thing is, you think we're so lost by saying these things to us. I think you seem incredibly lost, also think you sound borderline insane. Get a grip on actual reality.

      • Tag is literally "NotB8" But it so is... Anyways, I could create the exact same thread and replace "Atheist" with "Creationist" and have just as valid of a point.

      • Yeah guys come on listen to him we didn't just develop functioning brains "(which have more nerve connections than there are stars in the sky)" a guy who lives in the clouds created them from nothing. He just thought "I know I'll make a brain!" And poof! there it was. It all makes sense now...

      • Because why not. I don't need to believe in a god to know how much I love the arts, music, history, and so on. I'm not a religious person not because of the things they believe in. But because of all the death surrounded by each religion. Tell me if this sounds familiar. "We must conquer this land in the name of god!" It should sound familiar because that's what has been happening for thousands and thousands of year. Many wars has happened because of religion. Yes many has been because of other reasons. That still does not deny the fact that many more people died because of a stupid cause as believing in one god over the other. I'm not religious or even care for religion or the beliefs because of that. I don't care if the world happened naturally or just proofed into existence. All that matters to me. Is now. What we have today. The wonders of the recent past, and the promise of the near future. And I don't need a thing that only speculates on "how all things came into existance" to enjoy the world we have today.

          • There is evidence, perhaps incomplete but enough to remove reasonable doubt, for evolution. I have yet to see anyone give me a shred of comparable evidence for the existence of God. The usual answer is some hocus-pocus about faith.
