“Hey, are you awake?” The quiet voice on the other side of the wall softly spoke to her. Of course she was awake, she was always awake, and rarely ever was she not awake. Wearily, she pulled herself across the carpeted floor, like an infant learning to crawl. She sat with her back to the wall where the voice came from and rested the back of her head against the cool tile. “I’m awake. Why, what do you want now?” “Jeez, I’m just trying to be friendly, you don’t have to give me attitude.” “Look, I’m very tired, all I want to do is sit here and be miserable without having to be disturbed by you.” He was quiet for a few minutes, “I was just curious…” his thought trailed off. “Curious about what?” “Well, I was just wondering, do you know what your name is?” The dreaded question, he asked it every day, and every day she gave him the same answer. “No. I don’t…” “Yeah, I don’t know mine either,” his response was always the same as well. Nothing ever changed. “Do you remember what happened, after you woke up?” “After I was revived?” “Yeah.” She grew exhausted of telling him, day in and day out, but she knew that he wasn’t the one to blame for his lack of memory; the Vex were the ones responsible. “I remember rain drops. Lots of rain drops all over my helmet, so many I could barely see, I had to wipe them away with my hand. I remember being confused. I didn’t know who I was then either, and not much has changed since,” she anxiously twirled a piece of her long blonde hair around her finger as she recalled her waking. “I was in body armor from head to toe and I had no idea where it came from, or where I came from for that matter. Then, this floating device appeared in front of me, and it started speaking to me. It was as if I had just woken up from a dreamless sleep, it came to within an inch of my helmet, then said, ‘Oh! Thank God! I didn’t think I was able to resurrect you!’ and I remember asking, ‘Resurrect me? I was dead?’ “ Her bottom lip trembled a little bit, as it always did when she recalled her rebirth. “The next thing I remember, I was holding some type of automatic rifle in my hands, and even without any training or anything, I knew how to operate it. I looked around at all the green that surrounded me. Trees, bushes, thick, tall, grass, and strange, but beautiful flowers. I walked forward, but the ground was broken and cracked, and it emitted a strange blue smoke. This device told me that it was burning sulfur and that I should be careful about where I step,” a single unbidden tear rolled slowly down her face. “Then, I saw another. Like me, freshly awoken from death, I was almost afraid to move. I didn’t know who or what it was, if they were friendly or not, so I approached, but I didn’t have the time to say anything. These black clouds formed out of nowhere, but they weren’t normal clouds, they were scattered all over the ground, all around us. I knew that we were in danger, but there was nothing that I could do to save us,” another tear followed shortly after the first, and she stopped talking. “What happened after that?” came the soft voice through the wall. “He spoke to me. I only remember him asking, ‘Who are you?’ that’s when those monstrous machines appeared. We were completely surrounded, they made hideous mechanical noises when they walked, and every one of them had some strange looking weapon. Then my device appeared again, ‘Don’t move, lay down your guns and put your hand’s above your head very slowly, they aren’t shooting for some reason’ so we did.” “I thought that maybe, just maybe, we’d be able to run, but where would we run to? Deep in a jungle sea of green, I was lost, I had no idea of where we were, it was completely hopeless,” one last pause, one more tear trickled down the skin of her cheek. “They took us. I didn’t fight, I didn’t run, I didn’t do a f*cking damn thing. I just stood there, my hand’s up like a f*cking idiot. I didn’t know what to do,” her single tears turned into a steady stream of them, her eyes shut tight. Her blue eyes leaked heavy tears as she brought her hand’s up to cover her face, she sniffled, her body convulsed as she rocked back and forth on the floor. “Is that all you can remember?” his voice flowed gently into her eardrums once more, the same as it always did. “Isn’t that enough?” Her voice was broken and trembling. “Are you crying?” It took her a little while to answer as she tried to compose herself, “No, I’m just tired. I haven’t been sleeping much lately,” she lied to him, and the lie never changed either. “Well, if it makes you feel any better,” his voice seemed to perk up a little bit, “One of the Minds told me that they would let us go soon. It told me that there were only a few more tests they wanted to perform, then we would be free to go. I’m ready to get out of here, then at least maybe I can talk to that device again and figure out just who the Hell I am. Don’t you want to know who you are?” She didn’t reply to him, she couldn’t muster enough strength to. Her hands wrapped around her bare legs in order to pull them to her chest. Carefully, she slowly laid down where she was sitting and curled up into a little ball. Her body shook as she slowly drifted off into a sleep, a sleep that was sure to be filled with nightmares. Nightmares of walking pieces of metal with a red glowing eye, nightmares filled with the lone Guardian, standing off in the distance. His voice was soft and shrill when he asked her the same question, “Who are you?” [i]Thank you for reading! Hope you liked it!
