Suggestion: Dedicated servers

Dear Bungie, Congratulations on the House of Wolves launch! Seems like it's been quite the success, and I hope it stays fun. I wanted to suggest that Destiny's multiplayer components be transitioned to dedicated servers, rather than relying on the current setup. We've seen plenty of videos showcasing lagswitching along with other ill effects of a host with a poor connection impacting the other players with them. Dedicated servers wouldn't be able to solve everyone's connection problems, but they would certainly prevent an individual's connection problems from impacting and degrading the experience for anyone else. This would likely also lead to a decrease in attempted cheating, once players realized that the only person they were harming was themselves. Now, I know this is not a cheap proposition. But I'd like to suggest you guys go ahead and shoulder the burden now for a couple of reasons. 1. Your netcode is solid. For the most part, at least. There are (and likely will always be) the exceptions, but you've got all the data you need to demonstrate that the vast majority of the time, things are working as intended. So now's the time to start bending that code towards the (mostly) new infrastructure of dedicated servers. Because you've already got the core of it all figured out and running smoothly, for the most part. 2. Getting the infrastructure in place early for Destiny 2. Because I'm sure that dedicated servers are on your wishlist for Destiny 2, I'm also confident that you want to make sure it's a rock solid experience at launch for that game, and there's no better way to loadtest your infrastructure than with a playerbase the size of Destiny's. Maybe it's a PTR experience a-la World of Warcraft and the like, or maybe it's a major patch that you can reverse on a dime if needed. Either way, let us help to break in the new system by trying to break it. And once it's purring like a kitten for Destiny, it'll be that much easier to transition to Destiny 2. 3. Addressing a big issue wins brownie points. It may seem like I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too hear, with point 1 above in mind, but I'm not. Lag, disconnects, and hosting issues, are pretty much the biggest issue you guys have left to address. It's not game-breaking big, but most everyone's probably experience something along these lines, which makes it a widespread annoyance. Which is big. As I said before, dedicated servers aren't going to fix every issue, but they will fix a lot of them. And the perception that you're willing to make these big changes is a good will goldmine you can live off of for a while. You really can't lose here. It's going to take some money, and some engineers, and some time, but it'll be worth it. Not just for the Destiny that we're playing now, but for years to come. Thanks again for House of Wolves and all the ways that you're continuing to improve the game.

 • Well said! Disconnects turned me off the game when it first came out. I only just picked it back up a week ago, and even though it has improved immensely, it still has a way to go. It's the PvP where I see the effects of lag the most, but gladly not like at the begining where I was struggling to even stay in the game before being sent to orbit. Agreed, HoW has redeemed Bungie from the initial mess, but let's see ideas like yours make the big difference.
