You read it correctly. I sent in my original xbox one controller in for warranty service. They shipped one back. Well today (a month later) I received a second controller in the mail. Called up support who told me what happened, and to keep said controller. SCORE!! By the way because of what the rep told me I now hold the secret to getting free controllers by using a warranty replacement. There is a certain trick you have to do though.
