What is the best modern solution to mobile gaming?

What is the best modern solution to mobile gaming? I personally enjoy the mobility of smartphones for more casual games, but the PS Vita is pretty stunning for more complex games.

  • Played The Dark Knight Rises on my iPhone 5 today. It wasn't to bad but the controls were not the greatest.

    • Why isn't the Nvidia Shield an option? Streaming the game from a computer allows you to have desktop-quality gaming on a handheld.

      • The Vita packs the most power, for a pocket-sized device. I like the 3DS for the first-party titles too. Smartphone games have gotten pretty good, but there are three big downsides for me. Lack of physical controls sucks; I hate getting killed just because I put my thumb one mm away from the touch target. My phone also gets absurdly hot (110 - 114 degrees) when gaming for ~30 min, and it makes the device unusable until it cools down. Finally, it kills battery life... and I need my phone to be a phone, too lol.

Smartphone + Widespread controller support, I think is the way to go. I like my handhelds and own both a 3DS and a PSVita, but damn, eventhough the PSVita is relatively new, it still looks and feels like archaic technology next to my Galaxy S4, and don't even get me started with the 3DS. Also, with emulators on Android, I can play a lot of my favorite games up to the N64, and I think PSP emulation has surfaced and I know that Dolphin for Android (Gamecube, Wii) is currently a work in progress.

        • It's very situation-dependent. Casual gaming will remain strong on smartphones and tablets as they grow more common. Meanwhile laptops will continue to boast the processor and RAM necessary for more powerful gaming that consume both more time and computational resources. More of the same, basically. No traditional shooters will come to mobile devices in the foreseeable future.
