Thank you Destiny community...

I'll try to keep this short. I have never done the raid. I've always been the type of person that stays relatively quiet when meeting new people. People often think I'm a jerk because I stay quiet throughout a conversation. Naturally, I didn't want to complete the raid because the thought of meeting & organizing with different people made me anxious. A shy guy like me would feel even worse when he brings his team down for not knowing how to do the raid. Then came the raid "bug" fix, with Atheon randomly teleporting guardians at the last section. That fix did it. I would never do this raid. After seeing posts on this forum about people refusing to help noobs like myself, I figured it was deservedly so. If I had done the raid before the fix, I wouldn't be a hindrance to my teammates. Flashback to yesterday. I'm here on the forums and reply to a post about user locales (where you live). I live in Oklahoma City, USA and find some other people who live in the same state. I made some local friends! Great! Always nice to see some people you can call Okla"homies" (see what I did there? :D) That night, I log on and complete the heroic daily mission. Easy enough. Then I get an invite from one of my new found friends. We start talking and I ask him what the plan is. He says, "We're gonna do the raid!" "Eff..." I think to myself. "Well, new friend... I've never done the raid..." His response? "... No problem! We'll get this done." He gets a team assembled and I nervously wait to see & gauge the reactions to having some new guy on their team. Their response? Essentially the same thing, "no problem, let's do this". Okay, I'm feeling a little confident now. We do the raid on normal difficulty from beginning to end. Did I suck it up during the raid? Hell yeah I did. I died more times than I would've liked, but the team would always come back for me. They'd revive me, I'd say "sorry" and they'd respond with "no problem" every time. This is all while laughing and just messing around (the jump puzzle in particular brought many laughs for me). Throughout the raid, they'd wait patiently for me to catch up to them, guide me to chests and teach me tricks on the way to Atheon. We finally took down Atheon (I say "we" but it was basically them) and celebrated with many a cyber high five. I told them thanks for their patience with me and they acted like it was nothing, which made the experience even more awesome. With all that said, I just want to thank these forums and this community for being awesome. Despite the few downers that sometimes make these forums frustrating, there are even more like-minded and helpful guardians who just like to play as a team. I would not have met these cool peeps had it not been for these forums, so thanks again. I'm sorry I didn't keep it short. Edited for grammar. Also, it's amazing to see such kind and helpful people on this thread. You're what makes this game so fun.

      • I'll admit, this story moved me and I'm happy that you made some friends that support ya. It's rare to see someone that is actually great full about simply completing the raid a single time. I wish you and your team luck with hard mode and the up-coming raid in the DLC ( if you decide to get it) and if you ever need help, I would be more then glad to help you ^w^

      • I feel exactly the same, peoples rants on here about noobs not knowing how to use the relic or where to go etc. when in the vault really put me off. I've still never done it and am now level 28 but have made a few friends in the clan and these forums so I'm hoping that I can join in with some of them shortly and not be noob-bashed :|

        • There are some really great players on here that are absolutely great to run a raid with that are total class. Everyone dies in the raid and we all just help a brother out. I am so glad to see you had such a fine raid experience. I ran the normal with a team my buddy and I threw together last minute last night and we had a lot of fun and I was super excited I got my second raid gear (boots) at the templar. Great review of a first raid!! Keep raiding!

        • I've been lucky to find a team of kind and patient souls who led me through the first 3/4 of the raid a couple of days back. I now know exactly how bad I am at jumping - something I can work on - and which weapon skills I need to improve. Without their help I would not have known where to go with this game - I now have the opportunity to get my stuff in a pile and the capacity to become a useful raid team member. It's going to take some work, but I can see it now. Thanks @geestripes1 @HiFidelityCastro @AslanZombie @Vukhi for your help (and apologies if I have messed up your gamertags). You guys rock. @geestripes1 - the little guy is with us now, mother and son doing well, will see you online in a couple more days. All - there are some arseclowns out there, for sure, but there are also some truly amazing people who are willing to help. Bungie made us a game, and some of us have made it a lifestyle in amongst all the real life obligations. As in all other things, there is inspiration there if you can find it.

our clan is always 2-3 members short for the raid, and don't mind helping raid virgins. We raid on Saturday nights normal mode from about 2000 GMT. Last week we helped a team of 3 US raid noobs, and they did good in general, except in on the conflux phase, I was left to solo the middle while my noob floated left, for the whole time. only tooko 2.5 hours from start to finish. longest time was spend teleporting and getting the guys used to the chaos. :)

          • First time my friends and I did the raid was so much fun. I did read up some tactics so the group would have an idea what to expect. We didnt get that far that night (up to the Gatekeepers I believe) but it were good times. Cleared Atheon each time legit, before and after the patch now. We all didnt knew what to do exactly, but people picked something up and shared it, and we all got the hang of it. Good luck with more raiding and all! ^^

          • I feel the exact way you do. I'm not a real social person but I would to try the raid. I just don't want to be a part of a team of douche bags. Todd-Dax on PS4. We can game I'm quiet most of the time but just like to have fun.

            • Yesterday we invited a random into our raid group from the "Atheon Checkpoint." None of knew that he has never done it, then when we finally finished he reveals something. He's mostly deaf, none of us knew. He was never able to even get into to a raid due to because he was deaf. None of us even realized, that we ran through a part of the raid with someone who majority of people wouldn't let in. He went on saying Thanks, for letting him join and giving him some experience. Therefore saying anyone can do the Vault of Glass, no matter what disformitties, age, or problems they have. So next time you do a raid, I suggest always asking for a new player. Give them the experience, it wont hurt your team. So do it for the sake of everyone. I pity anyone who wont let a new player into their raid. The setback is minor, deal with it.

              • I too vowed never to raid. These are not the fights I like. I like 20 min and out. I too got an invite from folks met through 'LFG" posts. And while I still hate the raid, it wasnt because of the company I went with. I think you will find more people like you experienced. Just remove all underage racists from your list. Signed, Yeah, I'll help ya with Thorn. And you. And you...

Nice post! Great to hear something positive about this game for once! :) I was a bit like you at first. Incredibly shy and socially anxious. I really wanted to do the raid but I'm so scared of using a mic. I made a friend from doing a nightfall a few weeks back (we didn't use mics, it was real easy) and he invited me to do the raid one morning. Along the veins of your story, I never spoke much, only when necessary. I was actually surprised anyone could hear me at all when I did speak! I died plenty of times but everyone was so friendly and told me what was happening and what to do. Everything was so easy. The hardest part was actually when we finished. "um, ok, what should I do now?" I thought. I just said bye and thanks for the good raid and left. Felt pretty awkward. I wished I'd added some of those guys, they were all so friendly. I'm still not too fond of using my mic, but it's easier now, I feel more relaxed. So, yeah, that's the story of my first raid! :)

                • I was surprised myself. The first time I did the raid was with 5 randoms I met on here as well. Have to take the good with the bad. Although it wouldn't seem like it. There are way more normal people playing this game than it appears on here.

                • My first raid was similar to this. Only these people invited me out of the blue. The Xbox 360 clan leaders of Heroes of Eternal Light needed one extra random and invited me when I reached the tower. At the start I didn't have a mic and only had legendary gear and all rare guns. They explained everything to me and I used jumps and other motions to indicate I understood. It took us several hours to finish, but they had never finished the vault either. When everyone got back to the tower we equipped our new shaders and sat in a circle between the postmaster and vaults. Needless to say I am now a proud mic wearing member of an excellent clan comprised of great gamers. :)

                  • Your story is amazing and it reminded me of my own gaming experience with Destiny. Aside from Minecraft I haven't really played that many games, and Minecraft certainly doesn't prepare you for RPGs or Shooter Games. My friends and I working together accomplished so much and now I can say that I can actually play a decent game. Reading this makes me so happy because I remember when my friend was slowly explaining the Raid to me. He was super supportive and never got angry when I made a whole bunch of mistakes. Of course I would love some of the lag and glitches to be improved, but other than that we defeated the raid for the second time tonight. If you ever want to jam Destiny give us a shout!

                  • That's really awesome. I'm very glad to hear it, cause like you I'm pretty quiet and not one to talk much. And certainly don't want to be the downfall of an entire raid group. I had written off the raid as something I would miss out on. Your post helps renew my faith in my fellow gamers, and maybe I will get to raid one day. Thanks for the positive post.

                    • That's awesome. I found many nice people thanks to this forum. I'm alike, very shy and introvert. But I dared to step out of my bubble because I really wanted to experience the Vault. I'm glad I did. I found a nice clan and I now have a solid raid team with awesome people. We're currently working to beat hardmode together. :)
