Thank you Destiny community...

I'll try to keep this short. I have never done the raid. I've always been the type of person that stays relatively quiet when meeting new people. People often think I'm a jerk because I stay quiet throughout a conversation. Naturally, I didn't want to complete the raid because the thought of meeting & organizing with different people made me anxious. A shy guy like me would feel even worse when he brings his team down for not knowing how to do the raid. Then came the raid "bug" fix, with Atheon randomly teleporting guardians at the last section. That fix did it. I would never do this raid. After seeing posts on this forum about people refusing to help noobs like myself, I figured it was deservedly so. If I had done the raid before the fix, I wouldn't be a hindrance to my teammates. Flashback to yesterday. I'm here on the forums and reply to a post about user locales (where you live). I live in Oklahoma City, USA and find some other people who live in the same state. I made some local friends! Great! Always nice to see some people you can call Okla"homies" (see what I did there? :D) That night, I log on and complete the heroic daily mission. Easy enough. Then I get an invite from one of my new found friends. We start talking and I ask him what the plan is. He says, "We're gonna do the raid!" "Eff..." I think to myself. "Well, new friend... I've never done the raid..." His response? "... No problem! We'll get this done." He gets a team assembled and I nervously wait to see & gauge the reactions to having some new guy on their team. Their response? Essentially the same thing, "no problem, let's do this". Okay, I'm feeling a little confident now. We do the raid on normal difficulty from beginning to end. Did I suck it up during the raid? Hell yeah I did. I died more times than I would've liked, but the team would always come back for me. They'd revive me, I'd say "sorry" and they'd respond with "no problem" every time. This is all while laughing and just messing around (the jump puzzle in particular brought many laughs for me). Throughout the raid, they'd wait patiently for me to catch up to them, guide me to chests and teach me tricks on the way to Atheon. We finally took down Atheon (I say "we" but it was basically them) and celebrated with many a cyber high five. I told them thanks for their patience with me and they acted like it was nothing, which made the experience even more awesome. With all that said, I just want to thank these forums and this community for being awesome. Despite the few downers that sometimes make these forums frustrating, there are even more like-minded and helpful guardians who just like to play as a team. I would not have met these cool peeps had it not been for these forums, so thanks again. I'm sorry I didn't keep it short. Edited for grammar. Also, it's amazing to see such kind and helpful people on this thread. You're what makes this game so fun.

  • That's awesome. I'm still trying to get a group together to run it from beginning to end (I have no mic and last time I was waiting patiently to open a chest, was told "go go", opened it, and then found out they meant "go go" as in run to the chest in the next room...I was then kicked from the raid). But I ran into a random player yesterday who I helped with the weekly level 28 strike, and who promptly in return helped me finish the thorn bounty strike on the summoning pits. There are really good people out in the community.

    • Yeah, not everyone has to be a raid pro. It's so much better when people are laid back. Not knowing what to do can be nerve-wracking, and the threat of being kicked is ridiculous. The fights really aren't that difficult to understand, as long as someone can explain it for first-timers. If players are so "elite" that they can only stand to play with other great players, they should be able to carry a few newbies through the raid.

      • Very cool! Haven't done the raid myself cause I don't want to drag people down, but this gives me hope that there are people out there who are willing to play with scrubs like myself.

        • It's always rewarding to teach someone something, and teaching and explaining the raid is a lot of fun! (it actually brings some new stuff into the raid that you already performed several times) If you are aware that you are new to the thing and want to enjoy the experience (as you did), it will be an amazing experience for you and your co-raider. Dying or making mistake in the raid 26 is not that terrible. Glad to see that you enjoyed it! Looking forward to cross your road someday!

If we had more people like you playing this game the great experiences would be endless. Thanks for sharing your experience. It's definitely encouraging knowing there's still good people out there in a world full of turmoil and negativity. A game is to be enjoyed right?! That's why it's called a GAME. P.S.- I still have not completed the raid.

        • This post made me so very happy. I consider myself lucky to have found a group of people who are absolutely wonderful. We do a party chat every evening, even when we aren't all playing together, or even playing the same game. We have become a close-knit group of friends and I cherish the experience. So I would like to thank them, and the Destiny community, who continue to make this game fun.

        • Good to hear :) You only get better with it over time. Don't sweat dying in it for the first time. Because I believe I speak for everyone when I say we were all that new person at some point. Oh and don't apologize for not keeping it short. Brought a smile to my face, so thank you

        • happy to read this bro and hear about some cool folks out there. im only lvl 24 and not ready for the raid but hopefully when I am I find a crew like you did that wont smash me for sucking a$$ first time around. my fave thing about destiny is when you meet ppl doing strikes or events or even in crucible and you work together as a team. love it.

*numerous gentlemen in silk suits holding Martinis doff bowler hats in direction on OP* I get some aggro for being a Hunter, but you just have to find the right people who like you and want to work as a team, which you have done. I feel good for you, buddy.

            • Cool stuff. I play a lot with 5 friends from college and we always need a 6th for the raid. For the most part we joke around a lot while playing trying to make it fun. Everyone that plays with us admits that we are a great group. I wish there were others out there like that.

Like. Your reasons for not raiding are pretty much mine, along with my main character being a hunter (they don't get much raid love in this forum) and poor connection (don't want to be a burden with disconnections) I've even added cool people who have said they didn't mind and would help me raid but then I've never had the balls to speak to them or ask to get a raid started! Haha I'm such a social retard (my wife's term for me) worst thing is, once the initial, awkward (for me) first meeting is done, I'm a chilled, easy going guy who can party with the best of them (too much partying my wife also says). Don't know if I'll manage to raid ever as I don't know how much time I'll devote to destiny after the release of mcc Edit for p.s. Glad you got it done and met some cool people :)

            • Dude that is awesome to hear! Sadly for me i have lost touch to my inner guardian i used to play religiously but due to lack of friends and peeps to play with i have become lost in the galaxy. I too can be shy and quiet at times and every time i did try to raid with someone they'd get frustrated because i needed help or they didn't understand good English. I have struggled so much trying to find cool talkative people to play with. :/ id love to get back into the game but its hard when you don't have hardcore helpful people like i once was. At one point i even started my own clan to try and recruit people but most left or the others don't participate in anything :/ Anyone willing to help out a fellow guardian?

Despite these forums being a cesspool of shit, there's a lot of great people on here and I've met some great friends that'll last much longer than Destiny. I'm glad to hear you were able to complete the raid! I've taken a few groups of mostly new people through a few times and only 3-4 times did we not complete Atheon and all but ONE time was because people have real lives, jobs and kids that required their attention. To anyone reading this thread that's in the same boat as the OP, don't be discouraged by all the kids beings dicks. There are MANY veteran raiders that have no problem with taking new people through the normal raid and showing you the ropes. Some of the elitist kids on this forum develop amnesia and forget that someone had to show THEM how to do the raid when they started out, just ignore them and find a group that's willing to take it slow and explain along the way. Happy raiding!

I love guiding "raidnoobs" through the raid. They are usually really thankful and you create future raidbuddies. I don't mind that you make mistakes or die, you will learn from that. I'd rather see you pick up the relic and fail then die because nobody that was teleported picked it up because they were afraid. But after an experience I had last night, I refuse to play with people without the proper gear. If you're lvl 28-29 and you have been playing for nearly 2 months I expect you to know that minotaurs / praetorians have void shields and are absolute bitches and you really should have at least 1 strong legendary void weapon (heavy or fusion) to deal with them. Quote from last night after nearly an hour at the gatekeeper (note that we started from the beginning): "oh, should I use void on the minotaurs?" after that I was done with it (it wasn't just 1 without the right gear), though I promised them we go again today (I'll keep my promise). If you don't have experience with the raid and are willing to learn, you can send me a PM. I'm from the Netherlands and I don't like playing long after midnight, not because I need to go to bed, but I hate it that when I go to bed, game images still flash before my eyes :-P Oh, and Im on PS4...

              • Glad you found a good group of people to raid with. I never understand those that aren't willing to teach people and help people. The first time I went through the raid over a month ago, I was also worried about letting the team down but everyone was just enjoying the raid and a few of us were newbies at the time. As you mentioned, the jumping section brought many laughs for all of us. With my main group I raid with regularly now, the jumping part has turned into a bit of a joke for some as to not want to be the last to get to the gatekeeper platform

                • I have a similar story, so I won't rehash it. In short, a guy I went to high school with and I have been playing Destiny almost from day one. We've done the dailies and PE's and many many strikes, but we had never done the raid. We were taking a short break one night and I went AFK, by the time I got back, my friend had hooked up with a couple people that wanted to do the raid. Just random invites in the tower. We eventually got our 6 person fireteam and we started the raid. My friend and I had never done it and were clueless what we were doing. I had seen some videos, but I never actually attempted it and I got lost trying to open the vault. The others were patient with us and we eventually made it through. The best part is we laughed a lot, and as a team we made it through. I can't help but think that is what Bungie had in mind when developing the raid. Thanks for the post OP!!

                • I can't stand people who expect us to beat the raid in one go, but when we die once they get all pissed! I have a raid group that is basically the same thing as yours, but just for jokes, whenever someone if a different class dies, I say something like "Oh the filthy hunter died"
