A Thank You to Bungie

The day is July 27th, 2021. Today i had just lost my mother to breast cancer at the age of 19. When she passed, I felt myself entering a pit of depression that I didn’t think I’d be able to escape (or if I’d even try). After a couple of hours of mourning, I turned on my computer and opened up my favorite sci-fi FPS game, Destiny 2. I didn’t do too much, but it was a distraction. It made me feel better and it reminded me why I play this game so much. Destiny may have its problems like the special ammo economy in crucible, lobby balancing, trials cheaters, and so much more, but it doesn’t change the fact that Destiny (at least for me personally) is an escape that provides a happy place for me. I know people give Bungie a lot of criticism over how they’ve been doing things, but Destiny 2 has been improving and growing and i’m proud to be a part of its community and player base. Thank you, Bungie for not giving up on Destiny and continuing to trying to fix its problems despite the amount of hate and negative feedback. The Destiny community can be harsh, but that doesn’t stop the team from continuing to work. Again, thank you for creating the game I choose to go to when I’m feeling upset.

  • Sorry for your loss. I lost my father when I was in middle school, tough to go through. Video games helped, and also having some close friends to help. Just remember to take time to grief. Youre probably going to get addicted to coffee if you arent already and plenty of people will be bringing over food and helping out. However after about 3 months theyre all going to disappear and then thats when the realization will truly sink in. Make sure to stay busy, and focus on your future, as that is what all parents wish for their children. Hang in there. Eventually the sadness will turn into happy memories.

      • Sorry for your loss man, but I’m pretty sure you have more people in your life that deserves a dedicated post of thanks other then this garbage company. Even if you still think they deserve it, many of the people that designed the content you enjoy at the moment and in the past are no longer working on destiny, your thanking the skeleton crew. But again, hopefully you feel better, time heals all wounds as long as your strong enough to survive. Tough times don’t last, tough people do.

      • I don’t comment on forum post (like, ever) but this one definitely struck home for me. Last November, My mother also passed away from her third battle with cancer. I was only 18 at the time, much like you are going through this almost exact ordeal at pretty much the same age too. This game and the positive side of the community in it were a huge help to get me through all the grieving and depression that came after my loss. From just getting together with my friends again to beating Deep Stone Crypt for the first time, the idea that Bungie brought to life has been a blessing to me. On a slightly different note, I hope you are doing alright, as alright as one can be during such a traumatic and depressing time at least. Its okay if you aren’t though, it’s not expected of you to be alright by anyone with a sane mind. I can tell you that things do and will get better eventually. Not immediately, probably not for a while honestly; I’m still working through a lot and it’s already been half a year since my mother passed (time has flown this summer right!?). But eventually it will get a bit easier to carry on. Until that dawning day though, I wish you all the best that life can offer you, even though it has already taken so much. Good luck out there friend, and I hope you keep enjoying this game long after your pain has subsided :)

      • My mother died last year of pancreatic cancer. I was holding her hands as she passed man what an emotional roller coaster. From when she had stomech pain to death was 6 months. Cancer sucks! Best thing to do is dont hold anything in man let out the tears talk about her and remember the good times. Music is a great therapy for grieving.

But you posted two lines about your mum,but then spout a 2 page essay about bungo and the addiction facilitator they created. Your priorities are all messed up.

          • I lost my mom a while back, I didn’t play video games for a while when she passed. Now is the time to mourn, cry until you can’t anymore. I suggest you don’t play until that happens.

              • I know it’s hard, but just remember grieving is okay, having an escape is “okay” but remember to spend some time with the family you have with you now as well, make sure you guys are there for each other. Sorry for your loss.

                  • My condolences to you and your family. Just know that you are not alone and do your best to find strength. I have read your post a few times and have realized something, if you don't mind me sharing my thoughts. By seeing the game as not only as a distraction, but an effort to improve from where the game started is a good sign that you see the necessity of working through issues to find a good result. I feel that you will find the strength and understanding to work through these tough times and be able to move forward. You and your family have my prayers.
