It is pretty common to represent an argument you disagree with in the worst possible way because 1) arguing against it is a lot easier and 2) it's actually a really effective way to argue (see: politics). But it's ultimately a lot better - and more persuasive - if you can understand the best possible version of an argument against something you believe and then argue against that.
So, for example, if you think (or know, sorry) there are only 2 genders, what's the best case for there being more than 2? If you're an atheist, what's the most persuasive argument for the existence of a god? What's the best argument for impeaching Donald Trump, or locking up Hillary Clinton, or nationalizing healthcare, or getting rid of the income tax?

2 RepliesEdited by tjustie: 8/2/2018 2:59:51 AMMy opinions are all impenetrable fortresses of factual correctness and normative perfection. Really though, I dunno lol. So called "brain drain," if it is in fact a real and significant phenomenon, is something that should at least give immigration advocates something serious to think about.

I think the strongest argument against my beliefs is “Why is there so much pain in the world” or “do you mean to tell me that my dead loved ones aren’t going to heaven?” I believe these are the main reasons why a person wouldn’t believe in Christianity. You can provide multiple explanations for this and it would be entirely logical, but it won’t be accepted. Instead of the truth, most people hear what they want to hear and believe what is convenient. Because if they accepted Christianity as the truth, they would have to come to terms with the fact that their loved ones are lost because of the actions that they made and that they can’t be saved. But, those who are still alive can still be saved. We must learn from the mistakes of those who are lost because they wouldn’t want us to be dragged down with them.

2 RepliesI'm atheist and I believe that the universe is infinite with infinite possibilities within it and that includes the possibility for a god/gods to exist. Just not man's ideas of god or gods.

As a religious person. As there is no evidence either for the existence or against the existence of god the logical conclusion is that there is none

Edited by Section Ratio General: 8/3/2018 5:23:47 PMAs someone who is Catholic, one of the best arguments that I agreed with was from someone who told me that I can't cherry pick bible verses just to be an asshole to someone who isn't Catholic, or someone who is gay, and as of recent: treat immigrants, refugees, or anyone who has experienced any unfortunate circumstance as less than human. Edit: The recent one, I didn't treat immigrants or refugees like shit back when I was in high school, and I don't do that now. I've agreed with this because I have seen a good chunk of so called "Christians" and "Catholics" treat immigrants and people of immigrant origins like dirt and using the Bible as their reason to treat them like that.

As an atheist, I would say there's not enough proof on either side to prove there is or isn't a god/gods. That's why I don't bother with religious arguments anymore. I'll give you the reasons that I'm an atheist, but I don't try to convince anyone because of the lack of proof.

"What if somebody got pregnant from -blam!-?" It's a very powerful, poignant argument. I can't judge somebody who procures an abortion because of -blam!-. Yet I also can't justify murder because it it either. I makes no sense to compound evil with more evil.

If you're an atheist, what's the most persuasive argument for the existence of a god?
No physical proof that a being exists.
-
1 ReplyOh yeah, where's your proof? Then there's usually a reply from me of how you can't truly 100% proof His existence because of the reason that you don't want to believe in anything. It's a lot like the missing link argument that young children do against evolution. I don't want to believe that way, so I'm going to keep questioning it until you can't answer!

Best argument I know of for the existence of God is that the universe has the appearance of being “finely tuned” for life to exist. The likelihood of the universe being exactly the way it is, is extremely small. Of course there are explanations for this but you asked for the best arguments against my beliefs.
