From release, the new shader system looked profoundly negative, from a player standpoint. I decided to wait until I've gotten more play time in before making a post like this, but what I've seen regarding this issue has made the new system look even worse.
Shaders, being purely cosmetic, are just for fun. The new system reins in that fun by forcing players to commit to a shader when they use it. In D1 I'd use hyper-visible shaders like Glowhoo when playing with newbie friends so they could find and follow me more easily, then switch back to something less visually assaulting for everyday operation. We can't do that anymore. We'd lose our fun shader and our cruising shader in the process, now.
Now I do like that we can individually color armor pieces in D2. That's the kind of upgrade that I expect from a sequel. But shaders don't have to be consumable to facilitate that. Consumable shaders provide no benefit to the players.
The only thing the new shader system does is blatantly shove players toward the paid store to purchase random loot boxes, the most cynical, cash grabbing method of micro transactions. Keep in mind we are still expected to pay $15-$25 per DLC as the year goes on.
There is so much great stuff in the new game, to have it marred by a system as anti-player as this one saddens an infuriates me. Bungie, you can fix this. Please make this right, and do so.
TL, DR: game is really good, but shaders still greedy garbage.

Just run 2 sets of the same armor in different colors. Swap armor instead of shaders. It's not like it's difficult to get duplicates.

1 ReplyThe Trials flawless shader looks amazing in my opinion. I run it on everything I use

Glo hoo was a TDB shader All vanilla destiny shaders were meh Technically we are in vanilla D2 and the shaders are about the same -
8 RepliesI actually quite like how the shader system works now, I mean, this way I can customise each piece of armour how I like which is better than in D1 where most of the armour might look great with a certain shader but then there's just that 1 part that looks shite... I can also customise all my guns and my sparrow and ship by putting shaders on them as well. And with how flowing the glimmer river is, it gives you something actually fairly decent to spend a little on. Though having said that, I think a special kiosk or something where you can purchase already unlocked shaders for shards or something would be a good idea. At least that way it takes a small portion of the rng out of getting more of your new fave shader once you've found it the first time or two...

Along with the general focus on cosmetics and how near everything is connected to micro transactions as an option. It just reeks of a lack of confidence in your game. That goes for all games. Tangent in spoiler.
I really do like the art, music, and themes going on in this game. Those areas of bungie are doing great things. However it is tiring to have that be what keeps interest and not the gameplay. Not to say the gameplay is bad, but there's so little playing around with the established mechanics it really does become boring. They really need to understand that and work to better it. Also the writing is still bad.
5 RepliesAm I the only person with hundreds of shaders?
-
After two weeks of gameplay, I have an absurd amount of shaders without buying silver
-
I have a stupid amount of shaders available even though I use them often. FYI bright engrams drop in game for free and give you that bright dust or whatever, to buy more shaders with. If anything I can't imagine anyone actually needs to buy anything with real money at this point
-
Would be at least nice to breakdown the shaders and get some bright dust from them to use on other shaders we wanted more.

Edited by tanis38: 9/21/2017 9:09:39 PM
The new system reins in that fun by forcing players to commit to a shader when they use it.
This is the big issue for me. I used to constantly change shaders in D1. Depending on my mood I had a handful I knew I liked for each particular armor set. Other times, when I was running a full fire-team of 6 clanmates in either a Raid or in Crucible, we would decide to all match up our shaders for fun, so we'd head on over to the kiosk and sync up. Now we cannot do that anymore. This new shader system is pretty awful. I do not want to have an inventory full of multiple shaders of the same type, that I have to pay glimmer to apply. I want to be able to change my cosmetic appearance at will, depending on my mood or the activity I am running, and not have to worry about it. With all the QoL improvements we have seen in D2, why did some aspects that were actually fine in D1 take so many steps back?

PREACH!

4 RepliesAgreed. Still a MAJOR issue in this game. I really wish they fix this beyond flawed mechanic. It discourages customization in the game. Especially once you reach Endgame, cosmetics are a MUST.

10 RepliesThe whole shader thing really isn't that bad. People are exaggerating so, SO much.
-
Yup. Two things I absolutely despise about D2. The Loot tables, and the Shaders.
-
5 RepliesSystem is fine and I have a ton of shaders. Play the game and they drop like candy. You people are pathetic
-
Shaders should be at the bottom of everyone's list when it comes to changes in Destiny 2.
-
There's a shader called watermelon.

14 RepliesI don't understand all the bitching. I've used plenty of shaders but I have so many left just from playing the game that I don't think it's as big a problem as everyone is making. There are plenty of ways to get shaders, all you have to do is. PLAY. THE. GAME. I know it's a hard concept to grasp and all, but try it.

5 RepliesYou could just get more than one set of armor and switch whenever you wanted. It's pretty much the same system as Overwatch. I honestly don't understand the hate.
-
Eh. While I understand where you are coming from, and typically I agree, especially seeing as ornaments on exotics are unlocked permanently after use, even if you get a duplicate of one. That exact system could easily be applied to shaders, permanently unlocking legendary ones, while still being able to collect them for new gear you get. Obviously it'd only be permanent on that one gun or armor piece and that'd be fine honestly, things like trials shaders and raid shaders should have this mechanic attached, considering they are from the most difficult end game content. Sitting on a few trials ones I can't bring myself to use, simply because I can't bring myself to dwindle the supply if I don't intend to continue using that one armor piece or one gun. The system could have been better, but it's not too had either. You get bright engrams just for playing, so shaders are in semi-constant supply as it is, I've gotten them out of faction ranks, engrams, world chests. They are plentiful enough, but the system could use some minor tweaks if you ask me.

1 ReplyEdited by Caxton: 9/22/2017 1:59:41 AM'The only thing the new shader system does is blatantly shove players toward the paid store to purchase random loot boxes', yea if you're an impatient idiot, you can easily get 1-2 bright engram's a day and they have a well rested bonus that makes the first 3 of the week easier to get. Also if it's a certain shader you can farm them on planets or get them with bright dust when you dismantle bright engram items. Plus you get a ridiculous amount from just playing anyway.

I agree. I love the customization options, but not the way they're implemented. Hopefully it will change, but I don't see that happening for some time...
