I wake, sitting bolt upright I can see nothing. It's dark. Not the kind of dark where your eyes have adjusted, no... The kind of dark, that even with your eyes open, you still cannot see anything. No shapes, no outlines, no distant glow, you may as well have your eyes closed. I fumble around, slowly at first. I'm not sure where I am, or what might be near me in this suffocating darkness. Once I've realised that there's nothing near me, I calm down enough so that I can hear past my thumping heartbeat... Nothing... Nothing but deafening silence.
