Very disappointed about lack of 60fps on console

This is maybe my first time posting as a member of bungie.net but ive been a member here since halo 2. I'm never the one to complain about little things. I think bungie does an amazing job at developing and listening to the community. But hearing the news today of consoles staying at 30 fps for Destiny 2 (including xbox one x and ps4 pro) is a really HUGE letdown. I just watched the NVidia video of Destiny 2 on PC running at 4k 60 fps and it looked gorgeous. I've played Destiny for over 1200 hours. Its become one of my fav games ever. I would be lying if after hearing this news that I considered passing on D2. I know I'm not alone on this and I hope people here and in other forums let there voice be heard. I'm no game developer but I'm pretty sure that it would not be an issue to get 60fps running on xobx one x and ps4 pro, maybe even the original systems. So many games have been doing it for years. Its seems like PC may be the only way to go. Which is disappointing.

  • They claim they can't run it with the hardware. But A massive 32v32 battlefield game can run at 45-60 on console. There seems to be a lot more going on in a multiplayer battlefield game than a 4v4 destiny pvp match.

    • I too have considered passing on D2. I really wish that Bungies attitude was to tell us WHY rather than just saying it can't and that's that. With so many other game running at 60 fps, it is making it really hard to play anything else. Just a shame really.

Its all about balance horsepower. Ps4 and xbox one cant run Destiny 2 at 60fps. Even if ps4 pro and xbox one x could run them 60, they are still playing with the folks against ps4 and xbone, meaning that multiplayer is unfair. Sony talked about this issue before ps4 pro release. Multiplayer games will run the same frames as normal ps4, but only the graphics are better, because they dont give significant advantage.

      • What is a real kick in the pants is Bungie could unlock the console version and allow the possibility of 60 fps, but they won't. Why? Because the PS4 Pro can not handle 60 fps at 4k. And yet, Microsoft is over there with Scorpio basically saying they could possibly do it....BUT DON'T LOOK AT THEM BECAUSE SONY IS THE CORPORATE OVERLORD!

        • The only console that is (maybe) capable of running D2 at 60 fps is the Xbox One X, but they can't really implement 60 fps on that either since you will be playing against people who have the current Xbox One consoles. If you were running at 30 fps on your normal Xbox One, and someone you were playing against was running 60 fps on an Xbox One X, you would be at a huge disadvantage.

          • Yes perhaps uncapped would work on the pro and x but again this segregates the community as the regular xbox and PS4 would be on separate matchmaking pools as 60fps in pvp or trials would be one hell of an advantage

          • This is the problem with mid-range console updates, I think. A factor is going to be that people who have bought the PS4 Pro, or who plan to but the Xbox One X, want to feel like they're getting their money's worth. If they shell out on the hardware, they want to feel that the games they play are going to push that hardware to its limit. Being limited by what the "Console's little Brother" can feel like a slap in the face... ...except when I heard about the two console refreshes, I could always see this sort of thing happening. They're designed to play the same games side-by-side with the lower specced versions. Prettier graphics and a higher resolution is likely easy. Fully doubling the framerate, possibly less so. The Pro and the X are not "new consoles". They're slightly better versions of the existing consoles that can play the same games but with a little bit extra in the presentation department. Yes, they can do more but they aren't separate platforms. The same games still need to be able to run, and run well, on the baseline models. Especially at the moment when the PS4 Pro is relatively newly released and the Xbox One X isn't even out yet. I guess the other perceived problem is that the refreshed consoles could probably run really well (and very impressively) at well over 30fps. But there's a difference between "up to" and "locked at" and, for whatever reason, Bungie seem to favour being able to hold a consistent framerate - and without sacrificing detail. I get the feeling (although I may be wrong) that those who are annoyed at the 30fp lock just want it to be significantly above 30fps - "mostly 60 but might drop a little bit every once in a while" would still come over as an improvement to them. Or so it seems.

          • It's an issue with how slow the AMD jaguar CPU cores inside the consoles are. Sony and ms buy cheap AMD cpu's.

            • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwI6-jKlsO0&t=94s Looks gorgeous too....and 30 fps, and upscaled 4K...and almost ALL open-world games are 30 fps. Because that saves processing power for animation and environmental effects that make the game world feel much more alive, and immersive. I'm not willing to give that up, just so the game can run at 60 fps.. Something that provides benefits only to the Crucible player. If playing at high framerates is that important to you? Build a PC.

                • Very true. Even if they wanted to leave PVE at 30FPS, there is not excuse not having 60 FPS on PVP. Xbox One X has the power for 60 FPS, PS4 Pro can do 3k at 60 FPS I believe.

You are comparing very different games. Destiny is far more complicated (at least compared to bf1) which bf2 really is a reskin of). Destiny had loads more weapons. Destiny weapons had more combat modifiers. You carried 3 weapons which magnified the modifiers by 3. You also had weapons in inventory. Destiny characters had different subclasses with enough skill trees to create a hundred options. These subclasses also had their own melee and grenades that also may have perks that affect game play. Destiny armor had more modifiers. Both passive and active. Destiny also has more armor pieces with their own combat modifiers. You had inventory that could affect game play. You had characters with active and passive abilities that affect game play for other people in the game. All of these things are running in the background. All need to be managed by a CPU. And battlefield is really a generic character with few modifiers. So yea, they can focus more of the CPU on frame rate.

                • The ps4, and the xbox1 can't run 60fps. There is just too many things going on at once to do it. Those other games simply don't have the mechanic heavy things going on within them.

                • We've seen almost as many posts about this as dedicated servers. I'm not sure how that affect playing the game on a 65" HDR tv's. Might look like crap. I'm more concerned about... --lack of content. --- a few story missions, one raid... It's like they sliced up the game into a bunch of parts. --lack of PVP game modes. --- 4v4 doesn't sound very fun for the only option. Guessing that was the fix to lag? --no dedicated servers. --- I won't believe what they say until I get a chance to play on Xbox 1 -- the strike that was demo-ed looked so boring. Lots of open space, not many adds, mostly using primary, slow charging supers. -- weapons looked more cookie cutter. -- no grimoire -- I'm guessing we fixed vault space by deleting all our weapons or gear. I'm not saying don't buy the game, but I don't see how $30 worth of content is worth $60. It might be worth it wait a while and pick it up once the price drops. I guess we'll see when we play the beta.

It looks great, until you realize the cost to get it. You are talking a completely separate CPU and gpu, unlike the apu setups the consoles use, and each has far better cooling, better design, and probably more compute units enabled and available, and that all costs. I'm betting Nvidia also made sure the build of the game they used for that video was very specifically built to utilize their proprietary gpgpu software to make a probably overpowered gpu assist and back up the CPU when it came to moments that weren't resource heavy on the gpu. Drool over it, sure, but understand why it looks that way and the cost related to it. The graphics cards they used, and I'm willing to bet it was a paired set of cards, probably each cost as much as a new ps4 pro and had a CPU in that machine that likely ran at 4ghz on at least 6 cores.

It's sad that Star Wars Battlefront and other titles looks better and is hell of a lot more gorgeous and can actually run shit compared to Destiny II.

Console graphics are most always toned down in some fashion compared to PC's. The technology generally will always be more ahead of the development curve compared to consoles, so they generally get the upper hand. And most all games in an equivalent scale to Destiny/Destiny 2 will not be running 60fps. There are simply too many resources consumed by everything going on in the engine. Look at the Battlefront II trailer so many went gaga over. REALLY take an honest look at what all is in there... and what is NOT there compared to what we have seen in the Destiny franchise. You can spot one really obvious difference during the dogfight sequence over the city. Pause it periodically if you don't see the difference in the background landscape. The flatness of detail there can be one game changing element in and of itself. If you don't get what I am referring to, watch some videos of people that have glitched outside the Destiny zone barriers and are scooting around on their sparrows in the air above the maps and such. Make note of the 3D modeling going on out there in those landscapes.
